Here's a few other stories Auburn football fans will be interested in:

Solid. If you had just one word to describe the Auburn Tigers going into the 2010-11 season this would fit the bill. For some Tiger fans that word may not be a strong enough adjective, or may not be one that offers the level of optimism they fully deserve headed into the fall, but it is a justifiable step forward from the start of the 2009 season.

Now that “not-new” head coach Gene Chizik has a year under his belt at Jordan-Hare Stadium and expectations along with talent coming out of the locker room is a whole lot clearer, Auburn possesses all the right components to reach their true potential. This team also benefits from a coaching staff that stays intact, assistants and all, the only group to do so in the SEC.

Another reason for high hopes among Tiger fans is the depth situation at both quarterback and receiver. This scenario doesn’t always coincide with perfect timing for teams but it has for Auburn this year. Under the likely quarterback leadership of junior college transfer (and ex-Gator) Cameron Newton who has just two years at Auburn to tout his talents, Newton will be put to the test quickly. His ability is currently surpassing his competitors for the spot; Senior Neil Caudle, redshirt sophomore Barret Trotter and redshirt freshman Clint Moseley. Trotter is a solid prediction for the #2 QB position with his capability to stretch the field and make good decisions under pressure.

The Tiger QB will have an army of reliable receivers at his disposal. Players who have taken it to the next level and stand to have a stellar season in 2010-11 are Darvin Adams and Terrell Zachery. Add in Quindarius Carr, Kodi Burns, DeAngelo Benton, and Emory Blake and you’ve got depth with a capital “D” and no excuse not to be sailing the ball into the end zone.

Auburn put up a rushing stat of 2,756 yards in 2009 giving their running backs some impressive clout with Ben Tate and Onterio McCalebb shouldering a lot of those rushing yards. The high production of these running backs has something to do with the experience of the Tiger’s offensive line. The offensive line returns four of last year’s strongest and two sturdy junior college transfers going for the right tackle position making this line one that will pull some respect in the SEC if not command top billing. Experience is the key word when talking about center Ryan Pugh, tackle Lee Ziemba (who passed on the NFL), Mike Berry and Byron Isom. With these four healthy and injury-free, the quarterback and running backs should have some wide open potential.

Defensive coordinator Ted Roof has his challenges with depth lacking particularly at linebacker but he will have some good potential in new recruits like Jessel Curry, who although not highly talked about, is on campus and has a chance to show Roof his best first impression. Curry could stand out in a backup role with Auburn’s hopes to play more than three linebackers this season.

Says head coach Chizik after their A-Day Game this spring, “We’ve tried to challenge every guy so far. Every play makes our team better.” With great returning starters, playing LSU/Georgia/Arkansas at home, and memories of a close loss to Alabama last season as well as an Outback Bowl win, the Tigers are poised to surprise their SEC opponents this year as well as be BCS bowl bound. They will start out below the middle of the pack overall in the SEC at #7, but don’t expect them to stay there long.
