Trip to Atlanta's Georgia Dome

The Georgia Dome isn't just the home of the Atlanta Falcons. It's also the home to the SEC Football Championship Game as well as the SEC's Basketball Championship Tournament. And, the Chick-fil-A Bowl (formerly called the Peach Bowl) as well.

This year it will be South Carolina vs Florida State in the 2010 Chick-fil-A Bowl on New Year's Eve. Get your tickets at Chick-fil-A Bowl Tickets.

If you've ever been to one of those games, you know that Atlanta is buzzing with excitement when two of SEC's best football teams (or its basketball teams) roll into town.

The Georgia Dome is in a great area of Atlanta. In fact, sports fans know that if they plan their trip to the SEC Championship Game well in advance that they can not only watch an exciting game but they can also walk to and from the game from one of many close by hotels.

The Westin Peachtree Plaza is less than a mile from the Georgia Dome and supposedly one of the more luxurious hotels within walking distance. Since the hotel is a high rise, some of the best views of the city are found from this property. But a word of caution -- some guests have recently reported that while the staff is top-notch, the rooms are in need of renovations (2006 and 2007 reports).

One of the nicest properties closest to the Georgia Dome is the Hampton Inn and Suites located on Spring Street. Not only is it also less than a mile from the Georgia Dome but it is also close to everything in downtown Atlanta. It's about three blocks from Centennial Olympic Park and very close to the CNN Center and the popular Atlanta Merchandise and Gift Mart.

Naturally, when you're in Atlanta, specifically near the Georgia Dome, the hotel and motel accommodation options are numerous but the two listed above are obviously top choices. They are both nice properties with the advantage of being within walking distance to the dome.

If you're looking for some great grub, you'll never be short on options while you're in Atlanta. An all-around favorite is the Hard Rock Café and a very hot spot during SEC Championship games.

Another favorite, especially by locals is Pitty Pat's Porch. Southern Fare is worthy of every nickel and dime you pay and it will certainly cost you a pretty penny. Pitty Pat's Porch has a reputation for being a costly dive, but it's anything but when you compare it to other restaurants such as Applebee's, Red Lobster, and other casual dining restaurants. If you choose to go there, have one of their Mint Juleps—The Kentucky Derby has nothing over on Pitty Pat's Porch!

There are a lot of bars close to the Georgia Dome and probably some of the best will be found in the full-service hotels you'll see scattered throughout the downtown area. Feel free to drop in at any one of them while you're headed toward the game.

One of the most favored bars located in a boutique hotel is called "The Mark". It's a great place to hookup with some friends and a wonderful meeting place to discuss football or basketball while you wait for the game!

Also, don't forget about Jock's and Jill's at the CNN Center. That's another great place to drink and socialize before making your way over to the Georgia Dome!

Finally, here's a great place to find Atlanta Hotels.
