Tampa - Outback Bowl Trip Tips

This year it's Florida vs Penn State in the 2011 Outback Bowl on January 1. Learn more about SEC Football Travel Guide; SEC Baseball Travel Guide; SEC Basketball Travel Guide.

The home of the Buccaneers, Lightning, University of South Florida Bulls, and defending American League Champion Devil Rays, Tampa has slowly but surely evolved into one of the, if not THE best sports town in all of Florida. And if all you want to do while in town for the Outback Bowl is focus on sports, you will surely find plenty to fill your days and your nights. However, Tampa really has become a destination city that is so much more than that. In fact, while Miami may be the trendiest, and Orlando the most family-friendly, many feel that Tampa is the locale that combines the best of both worlds, and makes it the preferred destination in Florida.

The number one destination in the city of Tampa has been for years, and will continue to be for many to come, the Busch Gardens theme park. This spectacular sprawling destination takes two fantastic concepts that of a safari adventure, as well as that of an amusement park, and combines them into one completely thrilling experience. The park features regular and water rides as well as a large number of animal exhibits, many of which are interactive. Prices, as with more theme parks, are not cheap, but it's still worth it for the experience. Wear a hat and be prepared to drink plenty of water, as it gets hot no matter what time of year you go. http://www.buschgardens.com/bg/

Ybor City has evolved from being one of the most traditional neighborhoods in Tampa to, in recent years, becoming one of the trendiest. Ybor began as the city' "Latin quarter", and was once known primarily for being home to one of the largest cigar industries in the nation. However, it has since then evolved into so much more. Hopping clubs and innumerable restaurants line the streets in the neighborhood, and as such, the area has become the unequivocal center of Tampa nightlife. Once again, the prices are not low, but for most, they are well worth it. http://www.ybor.org/

Another must see site for any sports fan finding himself in the Tampa area is Legends Field, which is now also known as George M. Steinbrenner Field. Legends Field, built in 1996, serves as the spring home to the New York Yankees, and during the summer months, plays host to the Tampa Yankees, a low level minor league affiliate of the big league ballclub. It seats 10,000 for ballgames. During the Bowl season, there may be slightly less action, but tours of the Stadium (whose field dimensions exactly mirror those of Yankee Stadium) are offered year round. Additionally, of particular note to Yankees fans, is the replica of Monument Park, featuring displays devoted to each of the 16 Yankees whose numbers have been retired. http://www.steinbrennerfield.com/

What goes best with sports? Beer. And one last place worth checking out while in the Tampa area is the Yuengling Brewery, home of one of the nation' best mid-range beers. The Brewery is open from Monday through Friday 9:00am - 3:00am, and there are two tours offered each day, 10:00am and 1:00pm. There is no charge for tours unless you are in a group of 20 or more. http://www.yuengling.com/
