Louisiana State University Baton Rouge Trip

Baton Rouge, to me, is Louisiana at its finest. The crime rate, obviously, is lower than New Orleans but the southern charms and traditions of Louisiana are evident and, in my opinion, stronger in Baton Rouge than they ever were in New Orleans.

If you ever have the opportunity to visit, you may notice it too.

Home to the Louisiana State University Tigers, LSU is noted for having a strong football team and often, one of the best. In fact they were College Football’s National Champion in 2003.

The LSU basketball team is also normally nationally ranked and has a strong following as well.

So, whether fans are headed for The Maravich Center or Tiger Stadium("Death Valley”), when they roll into the great state of Louisiana, they’re quickly reminded why they’re there. It’s game time, and often, that’s the first time they even think about getting a room.

Wrong time to think about it.

Advance reservations are most definitely necessary when fans travel to Baton Rouge. After all, many who have been going to LSU games for years, know that hotel or motel reservations are an evil necessity that cannot be avoided. And that was even before Hurricane Katrina. The migration from New Orleans has made Baton Rouge busier than ever.

There are some fabulous places to stay and if you’re in Baton Rouge, Louisiana for a weekend, you’ll want to find them!

Hilton, Baton Rouge is one such place. The property is not only a chunk of history revisited but it is totally worth your time to walk through even if you aren’t fortunate enough to book your reservation there. Formerly the Heidelberg and Capital House Hotel, these two blended into the Hilton Baton Rouge Capital Center keeping some of its earlier splendor in some of the furnishings while adding enough new items to bring about a redecorated charm.

At the Hilton, LSU fans will find one of Baton Rouge’s best kept dinner secrets. Well, that’s a bit extreme but it’s a wonderful restaurant to find and one I think you’ll appreciate. The Tunnel is an intimate and unforgettable dining experience with fine wines and menu selections that will take you back again and again.

In Baton Rouge, you’re never going to be short on other dining choices with just about every cuisine covered but if you want some good southern barbeque, one restaurant can’t be missed. BJ’s Mesquite Smokehouse Barbeque and Grill is located on Scenic Highway and is a great place to kick back before kick-off!

While you’re in town for an LSU game, check out the Old Governor’s Mansion located on North Boulevard. The architecture of the property is wonderful and the home is often talked about by locals. So make sure you have a chance to at least drive by.

LSU fans often travel to Baton Rouge to visit with friends and meet up with college pals from the good ole days -- but they forget to look around. Baton Rouge’s older and stately homes are worthy of a close-up inspection with an appreciative eye.

Stop long enough to take it all in because these homes aren’t to be taken for granted. Kind of like the LSU Tigers. They can never be taken for granted and should never be ignored!
