Ohio State vs LSU: BCS Controversy -- Again!

Sweet! Ohio State vs LSU; SEC vs Big Ten; Les Miles vs Jim Tressel.

I can hardly wait. This is college football at its best.

Don't get me wrong. I spent some time at the office water cooler this morning and I know all about the Ohio State vs LSU BCS controversy.

I too would prefer a playoff system. But, if the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) is all we've got, and only two teams can play for college football's National Championship, at least they got the right two teams.

Don't misunderstand, I AM NOT DEFENDING THE BCS -

Heaven forbid.

But, I do have to say - they got it right!

Which is actually exactly why - the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) is WRONG for college football. You'll see what I mean in a minute.

First things first. The BCS picked the right teams. Of course, all the teams were flawed. 2007 will be remembered for "parity" in college football. No one survived the season unscathed. (Well, other than Hawaii).

But, of the choices presented at the end of the season, if you can only pick two teams to play for college football's national championship, Ohio State and LSU were the right teams to pick.

Ohio State was Big Ten Champion. LSU was the SEC Champ.

USC, Oklahoma and Virginia Tech can all make good arguments that they should be in the BCS Championship game as they each won their conference championships (respectively, the Pac-10, Big 12, and ACC).

However, each only has themselves to blame for not being there. Each lost two games this year.

So did LSU. True, but LSU beat Virginia Tech by 41 points and LSU's two losses both came in triple overtime to other winning, bowl-bound, teams (Kentucky and Arkansas).

USC, on the other hand, lost to 4-8 Stanford. Oklahoma lost to a Colorado team that ended up with 6 losses.

Of course, I can't leave Ohio State unscathed. The Buckeye's "only" had one loss; but they also had a weak schedule. In fact they only beat one top-25 team all year - Wisconsin. And, the Big Ten has no Championship game. So, they didn't have to play that extra, presumably tough, game.

Still, you just can't say either OSU or LSU don't belong in the championship game. They do. And you can't argue with the BCS choices last year either. See 2006 BCS Got it Right and 2006 BCS Championship.

But, you can say, the teams left out; (this year -- Oklahoma, USC, Virginia Tech; maybe Georgia and Kansas too) deserve a shot.

Even if they don't deserve it, we'd like to see it. We (the great College Football Nation) deserve it. The only way we'll ever get it will be with a playoff system. Only with a playoff system (like every other sport has) can you fairly determine college football's national champion.

As it is now, even after the BCS title game is played, and College Football's National Champion crowned, we'll still wonder. Wonder, what might have been if another team had been given a shot.

It's time to open up the system. The BCS controversy seems to increase each year. It's reached a crescendo this year. One way or another, in time, some sort of playoff system is on the way.

The problem, of course, is how do you maintain the great traditions of college football's bowls and still get the benefits of a playoff?

You've probably read about the proposed "Plus One" format. That would certainly be much better than the current system. It would at least let 4 teams compete for the championship.

But, the best idea I've heard was proposed about a month ago by a visitor to this site. You can read it at College Football Needs a Playoff. In that article, David Stevens proposes a 16-team playoff format, that preserves the bowls. Brilliant!

You can read other playoff ideas, and rate them, at What Do You Think of the BCS?. Please post your own thoughts there or at the bottom of this page.

In the meantime, we still have a great BCS Championship game to look forward to on January 7, 2008. Who will win?

You should know that Ohio State is 0-8 vs the SEC in bowl games. LSU all-American defensive tackle, Glenn Dorsey, will be healthy. Look for history to repeat itself.

Another OSU loss to the SEC. Another SEC Football Championship. LSU by 3.

Can't wait!!

Update: Naturally, we were right. LSU Did Win. If you want to read the latest BCS debacle, check out BCS Controversy.
