Which is the top college football fan attendance conference? If you are reading this, I suspect you probably already know the answer to that question.

Of course, the conference I'm talking about is the Southeastern Conference (SEC).

Given SEC Football's outstanding tradition and history, you would expect that it would naturally be the top college football fan attendance conference.

After all, a conference cannot sustain greatness on the gridiron without the support, passion, and, yes – money that the fans bring.

It's the old chicken vs. the egg argument –

Which came first? SEC football greatness on the field or SEC football greatness in the stands (i.e. SEC football fans)?

As you would expect, the SEC leads in each ranking category with 5 of the top 10; 8 of the top 20; and 10 of the top 40 schools in average fan attendance for 2006.

It's interesting to note the SEC showed the biggest increase in football fan attendance of the conferences; the Big Ten showed the biggest decrease. In fact, the SEC set a new all-time record for football fan attendance in 2006. With the Florida Gators now the current NCAA College Football Champion – 2007 will likely see SEC football fans set a new record.
