2012 Auburn Tigers Football Preview

The 2013 Auburn Tigers football team will be better. But, depth will be a problem. Look for a 6th place finish in the tough SEC West. Here's our 2013 Auburn Tigers Football Preview.

What caused an Alabama football fan to go too far and criminally poison the trees of Auburn? Check out:

Sports Fueled Violence

2011 SEC Record: 4-4 (4th SEC West) – Overall 8-5

Returning starters: 7 offense, 9 defense, 2 special teams

The Good: I got to see this team first hand at the Chik-Fil-A Bowl and if they can take that momentum into 2012, they will improve on their eight win season from 2011. The defensive line has a bunch of beasts on it and is under the tutelage of new Defensive Coordinator Brian Van Gorder. If a QB can emerge from an open competition that new OC Scot Loeffler is holding, they could reach the ten win plateau.

The Bad: No starting quarterback or tailback was named in the spring and that has to worry the Orange and Blue. They must replace 1,000 yard rusher Mike Dyer, and although it was good news when Onterio McCalebb decided to come back for his senior year, there are questions about his durability. The offensive line is young and inexperienced when it comes to slugging it out in the SEC.

The Ugly: Auburn followed up their National Championship season by going 4-4 in the SEC and the four losses were absolute butt whoopings. Auburn was outscored 170-45 by their most bitter rivals Georgia and Alabama, as well as SEC West foes LSU and Arkansas.

The Schedule: The schedule Gods were kind to the Tigers this year. In SEC play, they will only leave the state of Alabama three times, with two in Mississippi (Ole Miss and Mississippi State), the other in Tennessee against Vanderbilt. The opener is close to campus as they travel to Atlanta to take on Clemson.

What will happen: I really like what is going on over at the Loveliest Village on the Plaines as Gene Chizik has the pieces in place to make some noise. However, with a young offensive line, and nothing settled at quarterback or running back, as well as two new coordinators, I think Aubie will have to wait a little longer before they are ready to compete for a championship in the SEC. But that won’t be too long.

Bowl Game: Are you out of your Cotton pickin’ mind here? We’ll be seeing the Tigers in Bid D in January.

2012 Prediction: 3rd in the SEC West.
