2011 - 2012 Mississippi State Bulldogs Basketball Preview

SEC Sports Fan is predicting that Mississippi State will have a strong season; end up 5th in the SEC; and get a bid to the NCAA Tournament. We have more info at our 2011 - 2012 Southeastern Conference Basketball Predictions and Preview.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs are from the much maligned SEC West, and if they play up to their talent level, then they should have no real problems locking it up. But, if they have injury problems or eligibility issues, then the SEC West is suddenly wide open, which isn't necessarily a good thing. As of this moment, Mississippi State is the only team that I am sure of can be good, with Ole Miss being a possible second. Arkansas, Alabama, Auburn, and LSU all look to be set to struggle this season without help.

How the Bulldogs are going to replace Dee Bost is the biggest question entering this season. He and Barry Stewart both left the school, leaving a gaping hole in Mississippi State's Guard position. They look to be thin at that area, and they will need a leader to step up and lead them through the conference if they want to repeat as SEC West Champions.

Rick Stansbury did get a big break when two of his main players, Ravern Johnson and Renardo Sidney, did not enter the NBA Draft like they were expected to. This allowed the Bulldogs to keep arguably two of their best players for this season. The experience ofnthese two should allow for the Bulldogs to cruise through the West, though I do no think Mississippi State is on the same level that Florida and Kentucky are on right now.

This could all change, however, if Mississippi State's younger players can rally around the returning starters. If they could come together, this could still be a special season for the Bulldogs, and there is still a good chance that they could make a run in the SEC if the chips fall right. I fully expect them to make the NCAA Tournament this season, and if they can work on some of their depth issues, they could make a run there as well.
