CONGRATS -- THE FLORIDA GATORS ARE NCAA BASKETBALL CHAMPS AGAIN!!
2006 was certainly the "year of the Gator" as the University of Florida was the first school to EVER be the NCAA Division I Football and Basketball champion at the same time.
Now, the Gators have started out 2007 with a second consecutive NCAA basketball championship. Amazing!!
The Gator men's basketball team ended the season winning the regular season SEC title with a 13-3 conference record. They finished with an overall 35-5 record. They also won the SEC basketball tournament. They ended the regular season ranked 6th in the national polls and proceeded, of course, to win it all during March Madness.
The Lady Gators were not nearly so glorious. They ended up next to last in the SEC with a 3-13 conference record. They were 9-22 overall. Of course they were unranked and not selected for the NCAA tournament.
The big post-season news in florida basketball is the announcement that men's coach Billy Donovan will remain in Gainesville. There had been speculation he would return to Kentucky where he was an assistant under Rick Petino more than a decade ago.
Coach Donovan will have his work cut out for him in the 2007 - 2008 season as his four junior starters -- Joakim Noah, Al Horford, Corey Brewer, and Taurean Green have all announced they will enter the NBA draft. I hope they get a big payday as they certainly deserve it. Most of them could have turned pro last season and made a lot of money. They stayed an extra year to make history together -- which they certainly did.
Lee Humphrey was the 5th starter this year, and is a Senior. So, the Gators will have an all-new starting five next year. Of course, I'm sure, they will have no problem recruiting. Still, it will take some time to build back up to the program's current level. SEC basketball will be wide-open and very interesting next season.
Click Best College Basketball Conference to read how the Gators have keyed the rise of SEC basketball to the top of the heap. That article also adresses the question of whether the 2005 - 2007 Gators are the best team in college basketball history.
The rest of this page is not updated, but it is interesting to read what we predicted at the beginning of the season.
Florida Gators Basketball is clearly the best in the SEC. They may well be the best in the country.
The Florida Gators are the reigning national champions and all 5 starters return. They have the best player in the nation in 6-11 junior forward Joakim Noah, the MVP of the 2006 NCAA tournament. Noah has been nominated for the Wooden Award, as have team mates Corey Brewer and Al Horford. The Florida Gators Basketball team is balanced and ranked highly in both offensive and defensive categories. In 2006 - 2007 SEC Basketball, undoubtedly, Florida Gators Basketball is #1.
Big Game of Year: Florida at LSU, February 24. The Gators and Tigers both made it into the final four of the NCAA tournament last year. This is their only meeting in the regular season. The SEC League title, top NCAA seeding and the Wooden Award for the best player in the country (Noah and Glenn Davis) could all be on the line.

Stadium: The O'Connell Center. A very tough place for visitng teams to play. The Florida Gators typically win about 90% of their home games. The O'Connel Center seats over 12,000 and is home to the "rowdy reptiles" student section. It is always sold out.
Danny Sheridan gives Florida Gators Basketball 6:1 odds to repeat. That's tied with the UNC Tar Heels for the best odds of winning it all.

FLORIDA GATORS BASKETBALL (Women's)
Florida Lady Gators. The Lady Gators went 21-8 last year and made it to the NCAA tournament. But, they lost 4 of their 5 starters with only guard Sha Brooks returning.
Sha is a likely first-team all-SEC player. But she won't be enough. This will be a rebuilding year for the Lady Gators. They'll come in last in the SEC East but finish with a better record than everyone but LSU in the West. Still, no return trip to the NCAA.
