2011 - 2012 Georgia Bulldogs Basketball Preview

SEC Sports Fan is predicting that the Georgia Bulldogs will end the season in seventh place in the SEC (and maybe get an NIT bid). You can read more about that at our 2011 - 2012 Southeastern Conference Basketball Predictions and Preview.

The Georgia Bulldogs could be one of the most surprising teams after the dust settles on this upcoming season; they certainly have the playmaking ability that many other teams are lacking, especially in the SEC. If the Bulldogs can stay healthy and get some of their younger guys to step up, they could be a dangerous team in the SEC East, and could even finish as high as third in the division.

The combination of Travis Leslie and Trey Thompkins was absolutely electric last season; unfortunately, that was about all that was exciting about the Bulldogs. If they want to make a run in this league and contend with the likes of Florida and Kentucky, they need to become more than a one or in this case two, trick pony. Last season, Georgia won or lost based on the performances of Leslie and Thompkins, which is unfair to place all that pressure on younger players. The teams record was understandably lackluster because of this.

Leslie and Thompkins, with a year of experience learning each others play styles, should be even better than last year. They should be much more consistent this year, so teams can not expect them to have many bad games. Probably the biggest question mark for the Bulldogs will be if anyone else is going to step up and help out when the going gets tough; with teams gearing toward shutting down Leslie and Thompkins, other players will need to step up and make some big plays to keep defenses honest.

One main aspect of Georgia's success could be fan support; most fans around the Georgia campus are so focused on the football team that the basketball team can get left behind. Of course, if the football team can't turn its season around, then the fans may really be looking for something to take their minds away from the team's failure to meet expectations. If the basketball team can post a few wins while this is happening, then maybe they can steal a few fans.

If Georgia can get a couple key wins and finish strong in the SEC, I think they could get a 7 or 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament. They just need to win the games that they are capable of winning, and play well against teams like Kentucky to ensure their consideration.
