2011 - 2012 LSU Tigers Basketball Preview

The LSU Tigers look to continue to rebuild after winning the SEC two years ago. Last year was a disaster for the Tigers, and unfortunately they do not look to have improved much over the off season, which is a shame for such a historically strong program. I think their role in the SEC race this year will be the role of spoiler, although they will be a much less dangerous type of spoiler than a team like South Carolina.

The Tigers have lost quite a bit of talent from last year, including the best player on their team, Tasmin Mitchell. They also will be without their reigning leading scorer Bo Spencer for at least the first half of the season after he was ruled academically ineligible. These are huge blows to a team that is in desperate need of a leader that can step up and take charge.

Trent Johnson has done a great job with recruiting in the off season, and LSU could have a few recruits coming in that may help bolster an otherwise anemic offense. There is also Ole Miss transfer Malcolm White to consider. If the Tigers can get a few breaks, they could certainly improve on the horrific season they had last year.

The final part of the season is where I look for the Tigers to really make the most improvement. By then, the team chemistry should be better, and they should have all of their players getting good experience for the next season. They could even make a small run in the SEC Tournament, though I doubt it if they end up playing a team like Tennessee or Georgia, both of which should also be on the rise at that point in the season. But, if the Tigers can come together, they could crush someone else's dreams toward the end of the season, especially since they are not likely to make any kind of postseason tournament. I would look for the Tigers to beat somebody they weren't supposed to at the very end of the season for this reason alone.
