2008-2009 SOUTH CAROLINA GAMECOCKS BASKETBALL

The South Carolina Gamecocks basketball team is off to the 2009 NIT Tournament as a #3 seed. They went "one and done" at the SEC Tournament which knocked them out of the NCAA's.

South Carolina Gamecocks basketball will be an interesting, and somewhat unique case this season in the sense that the makeup of the team this season is almost identical to what it as last season. That is, except for its newly hired head coach Darrin Horn, who was last seen leading Western Kentucky to an unlikely first round upset of Drake in last season's NCAA Tournament. However, if recent history is any indication, that may be the last NCAA Tournament action that Horn sees for a while.

South Carolina went 14-18 overall over the course of the 2007-8 season, and compiled a 5-11 overall record in the Southeastern Conference. The poor record was indicative of the talent, or undoubtedly, the lack of talent, that made up the 2007-8 squad. The good news, if there is any, is that virtually all of the 2007-8 squad is back. The only departure is that of role player Dwayne Day, who averaged 5.1 points per game.

One thing that will be absolutely essential for new coach Darrin Horn to be able to do relatively immediately is to convince the returning starters, and the entire starting five are back, to completely forget about last season. Not only the results, but the way that they worked together, and the roles that they may or may no have fallen into. Because, frankly, those assignments clearly were not getting it done. Rather, players like leading scorer Devan Downey (18.4 ppg, 5.4 apg), Zam Fredrick (14.8 ppg), and Dominique Archie (10.6 ppg) need to take it on themselves to reinvent the attitude of this team, and reinvent the way in which they carry themselves on the floor.

Another thing to watch when it comes to the way that this team is able to reinvent itself is how coach Horn chooses to utilize the only incoming recruit of note, Darius Morrow. This big man, while not necessarily a top prospect, should prove capable enough to at least split time with incumbent center Mike Holmes. Holmes had a reasonable 2007-8 (8.5 ppg, 5.7 rpg), and could potentially evolve into a solid Division I center. But for now, some healthy competition could only be a good thing, so it will be interesting to see what Morrow brings.

It's going to be a rough season for the Gamecocks. While another year of experience, and hopefully a new attitude, will accompany new head coach Darrin Horn, the simple fact is, this team wasn't particularly talented last year, and still isn't. A .500 or better overall record, and 1-2 more conference wins would be a nice step in the right direction for this squad as the program looks to get back on track.
