2008 Ole Miss Rebels Soccer

If you are looking for our Current Ole Miss Rebels Soccer page, check out Ole Miss Rebels Soccer.

Ole Miss Rebels Soccer has come into the spotlight in recent years with steady winning seasons and appearances in post-season tournaments.

The proud Ole Miss Soccer program that boasts three Southeastern Conference Western Division titles, three NCAA Tournament appearances and the best record in the SEC West since 1999 looks to return to the top of the heap this season .

Ole Miss Soccer finished the 2007 season with a decent overall record 7-8-5 and finished third in the Southeastern Conference Western Division, despite not losing a match to a Western division foe for the third straight season. A strong senior class is eager to lead Ole Miss back to its place among the nation's best in the 2008 season. As head coach Steve Holeman enters his 14th year at the Rebel helm, he is quick to point to two outstanding facets of this year's team - leadership and chemistry.

Ole Miss welcomes back 14 letterwinners and nine of 11 starters from last year's team. All-SEC midfielders Amy Bayles and Jennifer Hance help make up the group senior class, which also includes goalkeeper Megan Vickery, defenders Christine Breaux, Austin Brown and Amanda Verkin, and forward Stacey Emmonds. From the present year's team Jennifer Hance, Danielle Johnson and Amy Bayles have earned All-SEC honors.

And, so far, it all working as planned. Ole Miss is 3-1 right now in conference play (though only 5-5 overall). We think the Lady Soccer Rebs will end up finishing second to LSU in the SEC West, but still have a winning record and make it to the 2008 NCAA Soccer Championship Tournament.

Discussion from a year ago: Under the direction of head coach Steve Holeman, who has been the Lady Rebels' coach since the establishment of the program in 1995, Ole Miss has appeared in three NCAA Tournaments; won three SEC-West Titles; and placed second in the SEC in 2005.

The Rebels had a decent season last year with an 8-7-5 record and made it to the SEC Tournament, where they were defeated by Kentucky in the first round. They had some impressive wins over Georgia, Arkansas, and Alabama and ended the season ranked second in the SEC West. The Rebels have been steadily building their team under Holeman, and the dedication seems to finally be paying off.

The majority of starters are returning to the pitch this year, including All-SEC players Chrissy Strini, Danielle Johnson, and Jennifer Hance. Coming off an undefeated spring season, Old Miss Rebels soccer looks strong going into the 2007 season.

Goalkeeper Ann Shelton, who is ranked first in UM history and fourth in SEC history for her goals-against average, is expected to bring victories after ranking second in the SEC for her eight shutouts last season.

Chrissy Strini, who was on the All-SEC first team in 2006, was selected for the 2007 All-SEC Soccer preseason team. She will play her last season at Ole Miss as a midfielder and has received good reviews from coach Holeman.

Hannah Weatherly looks promising at forward after leading the team's goals in the spring, along with teammate Hance. With their strong team momentum and key power players, the Lady Rebs' future looks bright. It is almost certain that they will have another winning season in 2007, and they have a good shot at making an appearance in the SEC Tournament once again.

The Lady Rebs have had an impressive showing during the spring exhibition season with a 6-0-3 record, the best spring record the team has ever had. They were able to defeat a number of NCAA Tournament teams and tie with Oklahoma State, who is currently number one in the nation. The ladies have been busy this summer hosting co-ed day camps for youths wanting to improve their soccer skills. The camp is staffed by both current and former players who worked with the kids until August 1st.

Prediction 2d in the SEC West; makes the SEC and NCAA Tournaments.
