LSU Tigers Soccer
Congrats to LSU Tigers Soccer -- 2007 SEC West Soccer Champs. LSU Tigers Soccer, in its second season under head coach Brian Lee, has begun making noise in college soccer. The Lady Tigers had a strong 2006 season after years of lackluster performances.
The combination of a talented coaching staff and a high number of returning starters could finally give the Tigers a shot at an SEC West Division Championship and possibly some post-season action that has eluded them for so many years.
2006 LSU Tigers Soccer finished with a 9-8-3 record, ranking third in the SEC West. Although they had some big wins against Alabama and Kentucky, the ladies were unable to make it to either the SEC or NCAA post-season tournament. The team did not improve significantly from 2005 when they had an 8-10-2 record with much thanks to coach Lee and the impressive recruiting class.
With all eleven returning starters and six talented newcomers, the Louisiana State University Soccer team is ranked seventeenth in the Central Region this year and the Lady Tigers seem to have the makings of a top-notch team.
One standout player will likely be Michelle Makasini, the number one ranked attacking midfielder in Texas. Makasini should bring incredible skill to the pitch this season even though she has missed some games for her club team and has been prone to injuries. She is said to be one of the best young players in the country and will most likely take her place at the frontline to prove why she is the most decorated freshman LSU has ever seen.
Midfielder Amanda Carreno, a top one hundred recruit in 2006, should also bring a lot to the pitch this year with her creative attacks and great teamwork. The Tigers should be able to pull off a winning season again thanks to the large number of returning starters, but at this point it is unclear if they will be good enough to make it to a post-season tournament.
Defender, Chelsea Potts will be a key player for the Lady Tigers. In fact, she was picked for the 2007 Preseason All-SEC Soccer Team.
LSU Tigers Soccer kept busy in the off-season with eight players competing in the 2007 USYS Southern Regional Championship in Oklahoma City. The ladies represented five different club teams and saw significant playing time. Makasini, who plays for the talented Dallas Texans Red 88, saw a lot of action on the pitch as a midfielder. Malorie Rutledge’s team, the Concorde Fire, made it to the semi-finals.
Head coach Brian Lee has been busy in the off-season as well, coaching the Region III Olympic Developmental Program summer camps, where some of the best youth soccer players in the country are trained. LSU soccer fans have also been making headlines lately by placing their team in the top twenty-five for home game attendance, the fourth highest ranking in the SEC.
We predict LSU Soccer will finish 3rd in the SEC West and not get an NCAA tournament bid.
We also predict you'll love the LSU Tigers Merchandise and Apparel, Tickets, and Baseball Caps.
