2008 Mississippi State Soccer

Mississippi State Soccer is at the bottom of SEC soccer. Sorry, but someone has to be last, and in soccer, it's Mississippi State.

Mississippi State Soccer finished the 2007 season with an overall record 6-12-1. But, the good news is that MSU's soccer team truly is a leader academically.

The Mississippi State soccer team has positioned 12 players on the 2007-08 Southeastern Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll which matches the 2003 squad for the third-most selections in the program's history.

Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Dallas and senior midfielder Kevyn Shelledy both gained the honor for the fourth time after finishing their careers in 2007. The duo becomes the third and fourth MState soccer players all-time to earn the distinction four straight seasons.

Seniors Jessica Davis and Treena Ferguson earned academic all-SEC for the third time. State senior soccer player Stephanie Dallas was named to the 2007 Southeastern Conference Community Service Team.

Mississippi State soccer coach Neil Macdonald has added to his spring signing class as Tarah Henderson and Sarah Lowdon have decided to play for MSU.

MSU Soccer returns 10 starters from the last year's squad. Junior goalkeeper Taryn Holland finished 3rd in the conference in saves (104). She is ranked sixth in school history in goalee saves second in the league with 5.47 saves per game. Of course, the large numbers of goalee saves may reflect a poor defense allowing lots of shots on goal ?

Senior Bethany Frazier ended 2007 tied for eighth all-time at Miss. State in career assists.

Prior discussion from a year ago: Head coach Neil MacDonald, is starting his fourth season at Mississippi State, and the Lady Bulldogs are looking to put some more wins on the board. Last year the Lady Bulldogs went 2-16 (1-10 in the SEC).

One high point was that the team was awarded the NSCAA/Adidas Team Academic Award for their impressive showmanship on the field and in the classroom.

Coach MacDonald has signed on four new players to add to the roster this year. Defender/midfielder Leanna Baldner seems promising; she received All-Conference and All-Region recognition in high school. This season the Lady Dogs are looking to the freshmen and sophomores, who make up the bulk of the team, to carry them to victory.

Last year's leading scorer, Treena Ferguson, returns as a Senior and will lead the Bulldogs. She had 7 goals and 14 points last year.

One player who is expected to prosper is Brandi Parker, who was redshirted last season due to a knee injury. Incoming freshman Katelyn Graben will likely take the spot as third defender, while standout sophomore Ashley Drake will have to sit out due to a foot injury.

Although the team seems to be on a better track than last year, it is unlikely they will have a winning season this year, especially with tough matches against Tennessee and Georgia on the road and an even tougher non-conference schedule. The Bulldogs may have a shot at passing Alabama, and finishing 5th in the SEC West, but it seems unlikely.
