Congrats to the Florida Gators Women's Soccer Team -- 2008 SEC Regular Season Soccer Champs -- again!

University of Florida soccer also holds the top five records for most points, goals, assists, and shots taken in any single game.

Florida soccer has made six appearances at the NCAA Soccer Championship Tournament, making it to the quarterfinals twice and winning it all in 1998. They have been participants in the NSCAA eight times, and seven of their players were named SEC Offensive Player of the Year, all in the last ten years.

Oh, and former Lady Gator, Danielle Fotopoulos, was the Best All-Time SEC Soccer Player.

The Lady Soccer Gators claimed their eighth overall and second consecutive SEC title in 2007, finishing with a 9-2 league record. They were a #3 seed in the NCAA tournament and won 2 games in the Tourny to make it to the "Sweet 16" before losing 1-0 to eventual National Champ -- USC.

Florida was tested early in 2008, facing several NSCAA Top-20 teams. The Lady Gators beat Kansas and Illinois. They also tied Colorado; but lost to Portland - all in September.

The high level of competition in those games will serve the Gators well as the season goes along. They are currently ranked 12th nationally.

Three Florida soccer players are among the soccer coaches preseason All-Southeastern Conference team. Gator All-American Heather Mitts as well as Abby Wambach both were selected to play on the US gold medal winning soccer team at the Beijing Olympics. Wambach was unable to play in the olympics due to an injury.

Junior All-American Lauren Hyde of the University of Florida is among the 47 players included in the Women's 2008 Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy Watch List released. Hyde earned a spot on the 2007 NSCAA All-America third team as a sophomore. She made her second consecutive appearance on the All-Southeastern first-team in 2007.

Under the Head Coach Becky Burleigh Florida soccer team will surely defend its Southeastern Conference team title in 2008.

Prior Year's Discussion: Florida finished 2006 ranked 14th nationally by Soccer Times. They ended up with a 14-6-5 record, including key wins against Loyola-Chicago and Marquette. The Florida Soccer team made it to the 3rd round of the 2006 NCAA Soccer Championship Tournament.

Three-time All-American Melanie Booth will return to the team this year after being absent since 2005 due to her commitments to her Canadian National Team. The senior defender will return near the fourth game, where she will likely make a huge impact on Florida's defense.

The team had a fairly good showing in the spring exhibition games with only one loss to the U.S. U-16 National Team. Bianca Gibbs scored five goals in the exhibition, while Stacy Bishop, Katie Green, and KeLeigh Hudson each scored two. They are showing great promise for the offense. Florida's spring season was cut short, however, due to numerous injuries. It is still unclear how that will affect the 2007 season.

Three Florida Gators Soccer players received the unique honor of being placed on the M.A.C. Herman Trophy watch list that is awarded to the top student-athlete in the NCAA Division 1. Senior Stacy Bishop, junior Ameera Abdullah, and sophomore Lauren Hyde are the three lucky ladies being considered for the award.

Sophomore Ashlee Elliott has been busy this summer as a member the U.S. Under-20 Women's National Team, which has been traveling throughout Manchester, England. Elliott has been a part of great success, winning two out of three games in the series.

However, the most notable recognition goes to Melanie Booth who is playing in the FIFA Women's World Cup in China during the month of September as a part of the Canadian National Soccer Team.

Bishop, Booth, Hyde, and Abdullah were all named to the All-SEC preseason team. Florida led the SEC in number of All-SEC preseason selects.

Florida Gators Soccer comes into the 2007 season ranked around #13 nationally in most pre-season polls. If Coach Becky Burleigh is able to whip the new recruits into shape and the team meshes well together, the Lady Gators should win the SEC-East regular season title (although they will be challenged by Tennessee) and get another NCAA tournament bid.
