2008 Alabama Crimson Tide Soccer
The Alabama Crimson Tide soccer team saw its long-time coach, Don Staley retire after last season. He ended with a career record of 135-128-12.
ALABAMA Crimson Tide Soccer finished the 2007 season with a record 9-10-1. New Head Coach Todd Bramble has 18 returning players on the team, including the team's six top scorers. However, the Soccer Tide face a tough schedule, playing 8 teams that made the NCAA Women's Soccer tournament last year.
Alabama's midfield looks to be a strength for the young squad with some senior leadership. One of the players that have established herself as a leader and a rock in the middle for Bramble is senior Jessica Deegan. Two other seniors that have made the point of making their final season in the Crimson Tide uniform special are Kailey Corken and Jamie Zimmerman.
One of the key offensive players will be sophomore Rosaly Periello. Petriello was third on the team in scoring as a freshman with nine points on three goals and three assists.
Last year's discussion: After a disappointing 5-14 season last year, the Lady Tide is hoping to come back in full force this season. Although Alabama had some impressive wins over Auburn, LSU, and Tulane and a surprising tie with Florida, the team was still unable to beat key teams like Georgia, Tennessee, and Ole Miss.
Despite the disappointment of last season, the Lady Tide shows true promise with an impressive batch of newcomers joining the team this year.
Among the new talent is goalkeeper Justine Bernier. Bernier was a gold medalist for the U16 National All-Stars in 2005, was named Rookie of the Year for her Canadian National Team the Lady Lynx, and was selected to be on the All W-League Team in 2006.
Victoria Frederick is another up-and-comer who made headlines for her skills at Huntsville High School, the 2006 Alabama 5A State Champs, where she was voted Most Valuable Offensive Player and holds the school record for most goals in one season. The Birmingham News also named Frederick the Alabama Player of the Year in 2006.
Bernier and Frederick join key players Haley McDonald and Rosaly Petriello, who played for the W-League's St. Catharines Jets, as well as three-time All-Conference and All-Region midfielder Kelly King.
Some of the Alabama Crimson Tide soccer players have been making pre-season noise on various club and league teams all over the world. Junior Jessie Deegan, who has been playing for the prestigious W-league's Northern Virginia Majestics, was recently chosen for the Team of the Week that consists of the top eleven players from all thirty-five league teams. The team also played big during the spring season going undefeated with a 3-0-3 record.
Although they do have some real talent, it is very unlikely that Alabama will challenge for the SEC Championship this year. However, they may be able to pull off a winning season if they continue playing as well as they did in the spring and fully utilize their most talented players.
