If you ask any SEC football fan which was the top all-time SEC offensive football team – he will quickly say it was one of Steve Spurrier's Florida Gators teams. There's just no doubt about it.
But, no one can compete with Spurrier's "Fun 'n' Gun" passing game at Florida. And overall, no doubt, that was the best SEC offensive football team in history.
But, which one do you pick? It really comes down to either the '95 or '96 Gator team.
Both were amazing. Here's a brief overview. The 1995 team:
Went 11-0 in the regular season and beat Arkansas 34-3 in the SEC Championship Game
Set league record with 534 points (excluding bowl game); 6413 yards; 4330 yards passing; 327 first downs; 74 touchdowns (48 through the air to lead the nation)
Averaged 43 points a game.
Beat Tennessee 62-37 and South Carolina 63-7
Closest game all year was an 18 point win at LSU
BUT was humiliated 62-24 by Nebraska in the Fiesta Bowl
The 1996 team:
Went 10-1 in the regular season (lost to Florida State 24-21)
Beat Alabama 45-30 in the SEC Championship Game
Broke own 1995 league record (and led the nation) with 559 points (excluding bowl game)
"Only" had 42 touchdown passes, but still led the nation
Beat Kentucky 65-0
QB Danny Wuerffel won the Heisman Trophy
Florida beat Florida State 52-20 in the Sugar Bowl to win the 1996 College Football National Championship
Obviously, it's pretty tough to pick between those two great offensive teams.
We pick the 1996 Florida Gators as the top all-time SEC offensive football team primarily because they won the big one. They won the National Championship.
If you are looking for a distinguishing factor, they don't get better than that.
