Terrance Cody Biography

Very few players in Alabama history have left such an impact on their school as Terrence Bernard Cody, Jr., or Mount Cody, as he was affectionately known due to his 360-pound frame that stuffed many a running game.

Originally from Ft. Myers, Florida, Cody spent two seasons at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. His play helped the Bulldogs to an unbeaten season in 2007. For his efforts, he was named NJCAA All-American, the MACJC Southern Division MVP and was ranked the number one college player in Mississippi. He had 31 tackles, five of those for loss, and three and a half sacks.

After transferring to Alabama, he was named to back-to-back All-America teams, and was a member of the 2009 SEC and National Championship Alabama Crimson Tide teams. Alabama went 26-2 during his time in Tuscaloosa, and undefeated in 2009.

In 2008, Alabama’s rush defense considerably improved, which was one reason they were SEC Western Division champions. After giving up 128.4 rushing yards a game in 2007, the Crimson Tide only allowed 78.8 yards per game the following season.“As far as one guy who has changed our team more than any, you’d have to go with Terrence,” offensive lineman Mike Johnson said.Cody was given the team’s Defensive Achievement Award for a newcomer who has played a critical role in the effectiveness of his unit.

In 2009, Cody was once again a defensive nightmare for offensive coordinators. As a defensive tackle, he helped the Crimson Tide lead the Southeastern Conference in rushing defense, allowing opponents only a shade over 78 yards per game. No player rushed for 100 yards against the Tide; the closest was Anthony Dixon of Mississippi State with 81 yards. Personally, I'll never forget Cody's block of a Tennessee field goal as time expired to save Bama's undefeated record. It's a painful memory for me.

As the Tide prepared for the 2010 BCS National Championship Game, Cody was praised by Texas Longhorns guard Charlie Tanner. Tanner said, "They call him Mount Cody for a reason. He plays like he’s 450 pounds and can move like he’s (Longhorns linebacker) Sergio Kindle."

Tanner’s praise was prophetic as Bama held Texas to 81 yards rushing, which was more than 70 yards below their season average, as the Tide won their first national championship since 1992.

He was named to the AP All-SEC First Team, and the All-America teams from CBS Sports, Walter Camp, FWAA, Scout.com and the Associate Press. He was a finalist for the Lombardi Award, Nagurski Trophy, and the Bednarik Award.

Yahoo! Sports' national columnist Dan Wetzel and Mike Hiserman of the Los Angeles Times wrote that Cody deserved Heisman Trophy consideration. Hiserman went as far as to write, “Cody is the best player on what might be college football's top defense."

After leaving Tuscaloosa, Cody was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft.
