John Hannah Biography

John Allen "Hog" Hannah is widely regarded as one of the greatest lineman, not only in college, but also in the NFL. He played tackle and guard under Paul "Bear" Bryant from 1970-1972. He was a two-time all All-SEC selection, earned All-American honors twice and was inducted into the College Hall of Fame in 1999. In addition, he was named to the University of Alabama 1970s All-Decade team and the Alabama All-Century Team. He was inducted into the Orange Bowl Hall Of Fame in 2007.

Hannah, who is a native of Albertville, Alabama, was not just a star football player in Tuscaloosa. He also lettered in both track (shot put, discus) and wrestling.

How he got away from the University of Tennessee is something Vol fans have regretted for decades. Hannah was only 100 miles away in Chattanooga, and was making a name for himself as a national heavyweight wrestling champion at The Baylor School for Boys. "I could do things that others couldn't because I had some athleticism," Hannah says.

One of the more memorable games Hannah played in his career at Alabama was in 1970, when the sophomore lined up against USC at Legion Field. In the game, USC's star black tailback, Sam Cunningham, had a field day as the Trojans routed the Tide 42-21. "Bear" Bryant knew that to compete nationally, he would have to have black players, like some of the other powers in college football, such as USC, Michigan, Michigan State, and Penn State. Bryant was later to say that, "Sam Cunningham did more for integration that night, than Martin Luther King Jr. had in years".

After his university career, Hannah was selected in the first round by the New England Patriots. He played his entire 12 year career with the Patriots, and garnered a trophy room of accolades. He was named All-AFC and All-Pro 10 times each and was selected to play in nine Pro Bowls. Hannah was also named to the NFL All-Decade Team twice, 1970s and 1980s, was the #1 guard on the NFL 75th Anniversary Team and was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1991. In addition, he was named as the best offensive lineman of all time by Sports Illustrated.

Hannah comes from a football playing family. His father, Herb, played offensive tackle with the New York Giants. His uncle, Bill, played guard at Alabama. But that's not all because his brothers also donned the pads. His brother Charley was a starting guard for the Los Angeles Raiders, and his younger brother David, followed in his footsteps for the Crimson Tide, but his career was cut short by a knee injury.

Hannah runs John Hannah Associates, which does corporate training and team development for businesses, focusing on the banking industry.
