Dan Mullen Biography

Prior to his hiring by Mississippi State University as their newest head football coach, Dan Mullen was widely regarded as one of the hottest commodities across the nation, and in fact, has been for years rumored to be in consideration for some of the highest profile vacancies in the nation. Up until now, Mullen had rebuffed these offers in order to remain with the Florida Gators. But finally, someone was able to wrestle him away.

While at the University of Florida, Dan Mullen led an offense that was considered, for the duration of his tenure, one of the most prolific in the nation. In fact, when all is said and done, the national championships that the Florida Gators managed to win over his tenure there (which were from 2005-2008) were primarily won on the shoulders of this epic offense, which was a seemingly annual fixture at the top of the NCAA offensive statistics lists.

Mullen has been specifically noted for the success he has had in grooming his young quarterbacks. During his tenure at the University of Florida, he has coached three different quarterbacks that ultimately put up numbers that led to their Heisman consideration. These young quarterbacks are current Gator star Tim Tebow and former Gator, and current Montreal Alouette, Chris Leak. Tebow went on to actually win the Heisman, in 2007, and was a finalist in 2008.

Mullen was brought to the University of Florida by the previous head coach that he had worked under, Urban Meyer, who worked with him at the University of Utah. While at Utah, Dan Mullen developed his offensive game calling strategies and schemes while working as the team's quarterbacks coach. It was during the time that Mullen served on the coaching staff that the Utah football team stepped into the national spotlight behind a fearsome offense. While serving as QB coach, Mullen worked closely with Heisman finalist and current San Francisco 49er Alex Smith.

Prior to serving as the quarterbacks coach at the University of Utah, Mullen served as the quarterbacks coach at Bowling Green for 2 seasons, seasons during which Bowling Green ran a highly successful offensive scheme. During the time he coached at Bowling Green, he also served under coach Urban Meyer, who, similar to his transition to Florida more recently, also brought him along to Utah when he took that position. In addition, Mullen has also coached for a period of time at two other Division 1 institutions, Notre Dame University (1999-2000) and Syracuse University (1998). Mullen's coaching career began at Wagner College where he was the wide receivers coach from 1994-1995. He also coached wide receivers at Columbia University from 1996-1997.
