2007-2008 Ole Miss Basketball

It has been a rocky ride for Ole Miss basketball this year. They started the season with low expectations. Then for a while they were playing like a top-10 team. They ended up on the bubble for the NCAA tournament, but their bubble burst when they lost to Georgia in the first round of the SEC tournament.

Still, the Rebels got a 2 seed in the NIT tournament and made it all the way to the semi-finals -- where they lost to Ohio State. Not bad. And their young team will be better next year -- 2008-2009. We'll have more on that soon. Or, post your own opinion at the bottom of this page.

Prior Discussion:

Ole Miss Rebels basketball is headed in the right direction. Head coach Andy Kennedy, who was named 2007 SEC Coach of the Year by the Associated Press, led the Rebs to an impressive season last year. In fact they made it to the Sweet 16 in last year's NIT tournament. And, they almost got an NCAA bid.

The University of Mississippi basketball team had an impressive 23-13 record last year. They tied for first in the SEC West and made it to the second round of the SEC tournament, where they were defeated by Florida 80-59. As noted above, the Rebs were also invited to be in the National Invitational Tournament, where they beat Appalachian State at home before losing to Clemson (NIT runner-up) 89-68.

Unfortunately for Ole Miss basketball, most of the key players from the 2006-2007 team have graduated. So, this will be a rebuilding year.

Dwayne Curtis is one of only two returning starters and is expected to lead the team this season, along with transfer student Kenny Williams. Williams is joining the Rebs after signing with Auburn his first year.

Coach Kennedy has recently added Malcolm White to the Rebs roster. White, who was ranked sixty-seventh in the nation’s top recruits, will lend his 6’9” frame and skill at forward to the team this year.

Old Miss plays its home games at the Tad Smith Coliseum, which will be revamped this year to include a high-tech video ribbon board around the entire length of the baselines. The new renovation is expected to cost around two million dollars but will add a significant amount of class to the Rebs’ home.

Ole Miss has really had an amazing season so far. Many (including us for a while) predicted Ole Miss would finish in the cellar of the SEC. They have proven us wrong. Andy Kennedy is clearly leading the program in the right direction.

That the Reb's have accomplished so much in a year that they lost so many players from last season is amazing. Congrats to the University of Mississippi!
