Kevin Sumlin Biography

Texas A&M started the off-season with a bit of a problem. They had no football coach. Well now they most certainly they do and boy are they happy to finally happy to have the man they think will lead them back to the Promised Land. Its Kevin Sumlin that Athletic Director, Bill Byrne announced would come in as the new head man for the Aggies coming into the SEC next year. Kevin is a great recruiter who knows the region and who has been in the area for a long time. He is well known as a man who coaches hard and is in the office when he should be and there is nothing he won't do for his players. This is the type of man they want.

Sumlin comes off of a very, very highly successful season with the Houston Cougars who could have been in the BCS if not for a couple of late season miss-steps. Their ability to run high powered, exciting, put buts in the seats offense is going to really get the blood going in Aggie land. This is going to make for some things that Aggie fans aren't used to, but they haven't been in the SEC before either, so they ought to get ready for a whole new ball game. Sumlin was an assistant at A&M before and knows all about the 12th man and he knows that he needs to recruit both fans and players and to get this thing going for the new conference and an SEC atmosphere.

Sumlin had a 35-17 record at Houston and had a bowl game for 3 consecutive years for a team that previously had suffered greatly. He won their first bowl game since 1980 against Air Force in 2008. He was almost the Paul Bryant National coach of the year in 2009.

In 2010 disaster struck in Houston and the top two quarterbacks went down. With the coaches' pass heavy offense, this was certainly doomed. They avoided complete disaster and still went 5-7, and just missed out on going to a bowl game. This coach can even coach through missing players and adversity as we all know is a must in the hard hitting injury prone SEC.

He went to Oklahoma to be the Oklahoma as a co-offensive coordinator and special team's coordinator. While there and working with the receivers and tight ends the Sooners went to five straight bowl games.

Sumlin coached in one position or another at Purdue, Minnesota, Wyoming and Washington State. He has done his time in the background of being an assistant, stepped up at a smaller college and is now looking to move his chair up to the grown up table with the big dogs in the SEC.

He has won several coaching awards, all in 2007. The Field Turf National Coach of the Year, Finalist for Robinson, Bryant and Munger Awards as Well as Big 12 Co-Coach of the Year.

This is a man blessed with a great family. He was born in Brewton Alabama. He went to High School in Indionapolis and graduated there. He has a wife, Charlene, and four children: daughters Courtney and Shelby, and sons Jackson and Joey.
