GEORGIA BULLDOGS WOMENS BASKETBALL

Congrats to the Georgia Lady Bulldogs basketball team. They join their male counterparts in the NCAA tournament.

The Lady Dogs got a #8 seed in the South Region. Their first game in March Madness will be Sunday afternoon (March 23) against Iowa. The game will be on ESPN. But, if you want to see it live, you can get tickets at 2008 March Madness Tickets.

Prior Discussion:

The Georgia Bulldogs womens basketball team has enjoyed great success in college basketball under the direction of head coach Andy Landers, who has been with the team since 1979, and is currently the winningest coach in the school’s history.

Under Landers the Lady Dogs have won seven SEC titles and four SEC tournaments. They have been to the NCAA tournament 23 times, including five trips to the final four.

The Lady Dogs had a great 2006-2007 season with a 27-6 record. They ranked second in the SEC-East and second in the SEC overall. Georgia made it to the second round of the SEC tournament beating out Kentucky before losing to Vanderbilt 81-56. The team also went to the NCAA tournament where they made it to the sweet sixteen, losing to Purdue 78-65. The Dogs ranked 14th in the USA Today/ESPN coaches Top 25 women’s college basketball poll.

We look for the Lady Dogs to have a great year. With Tasha Humphrey they would win most any conference. But, not the SEC. Still, they'll likely come in 3rd in the SEC and maybe make it all the way to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament.

The Lady Dogs are looking good for the upcoming season bringing back three starters from last year including Tasha Humphrey, Cori Chambers, and Megan Darrah. Chambers, who broke Georgia’s record for three pointers, is likely to make an impact on the team’s success this year. Junior Rebecca Rowsey is hoping to make her mark on the court this year after sitting out last season because of a knee injury.

Tasha Humphrey, who was named to Street and Smith’s “Terrific Ten” and on the John R. Wooden Preseason Top 30, will return no doubt be Georgia’s key playmaker in the upcoming season as she returns for her senior year as forward. With some great talent and several starters returning, the Lady Dogs are looking good to play well in the upcoming season. They will likely place high in the SEC once again and are likely to make it to the NCAA tournament if they can defeat some tough competition on the road and in the SEC.

The Lady Dogs have been making many headlines recently and have been named on many preseason honors lists. The team was ranked #13 in the AP National Poll and #13 in the USA Today/ ESPN coaches’ poll at the end of last season. Humphrey was recently named to the Wade Trophy watch list for the third year in a row. This award, which is given by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, is known as the Heisman for women’s basketball. The winner will be announced in April during the NCAA Final Four.

The ladies of Georgia scored well on several preseason polls ranking fourth on Lindy’s preseason poll, seventh on Streets and Smith’s, and fifth on Athlon’s. The team will kick off their 2007-2008 season on November 9 when they play Richmond at home.
