2010-2011 MISSISSIPPI STATE BULLDOGS WOMENS BASKETBALL PREVIEW

The Mississippi State Lady Bulldogs look to be in a dog fight with Arkansas in terms of which team ends up in the cellar of the SEC. I think that Arkansas has a bit of an advantage in their best players so I have the Lady Bulldogs in the cellar for now. The gap is not wide between the two schools, so Mississippi State could potentially play their way out of the cellar with wins over Arkansas.

Mississippi State head coach Sharon Fanning will look to motivate her players for what could be a rough tour through a top heavy SEC. The good news for Fanning is that the Lady Bulldogs play in the SEC West, so they only are forced to play the dominating SEC East in one game each, rather than the two games that they will play against their own divisional opponents in the SEC West.

The biggest blow to Mississippi State comes from the loss of the three best players on the team. Alexis Rack, Armelie Lumanu, and Chanel Mokango were the three top scorers from last season's squad, and they will be sorely missed as Mississippi State enters what could be one of the toughest seasons in the program's history.

Armelie Lumanu
Thanks to Morgan Harrison from Flikr.com for this great picture of Lady Bulldog guard Armelie Lumanu.

The defense does not seem to be in any better position than the offense. Most of Mississippi State's top defenders from a year ago are gone as well, leaving gaping holes in a defense that was pretty good last season. If they are able, however, to bring the team together then they could surprise a few teams with close games along the way.

The only way that I see for the Lady Bulldogs to have a chance at the postseason would be for them to get on a winning streak during the SEC Tournament. Unfortunately, I can not see them competing with teams like Tennessee and Kentucky when the going gets tough down the stretch.
