Prior Discussion:
Meet the Kentucky Wildcats womens basketball team. Founded in 1902, the “Cats” are famously known for a number of successes, including charting more than 20 wins in nine years and defeating three ranked opponents in 1999 and ranking 21st in the Associated Press and 23rd in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll for one week in 2006.
On April 23, 2007, Matthew Mitchell was named as head coach. Prior to coaching at UK, he was head coach for the Lady Eagles at Morehead State University, where he is known for compiling an overall record of 30-29 record (.508) and helping them go from a 5-22 record a year prior to his arrival to a 16-13 overall mark and 11-9 league record in his first season.
The Kentucky Wildcats womens basketball team practice in the Joe Craft Center, which opened in January 2007, and play home games in the Memorial Coliseum.
The Cats had a great 2006-2007 season. Out of 34 games between November 2006 and March 2007, the team won 20 of them. (6 of these include conference games.)
Some of these included games against Washington State (80-51), Southern Illinois (78-59), Kent State (81-47), and Alabama State (75-46). Jennifer Humphrey led the season with the most rebounds (10.3) and Sarah Elliott with the most points per game (13.5).
Trailing close behind them is Elliott with 7.0 rebounds per game and Samantha Mahoney with 12.4 points per game. Carly Ormerod had the most assisted points per game (3.7), with Mahoney slightly behind her (3.6).
It is hard to say how well the Cats will do in the upcoming 2007-2008 season. On one hand, they have two strong players joining the team. In July 2007, Victoria Dunlap from Nashville, Tennessee defended her youth women’s heptathlon title as captured the long jump title at the USA Youth Outdoor Championships in Lisle, Illinois.
Catina Bett from Gadsden City, Alabama averaged 15.2 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game during her last season in high school. She is the 2007 women’s 6A Player of the Year by the Alabama Sports Writers Association. On the other hand, they have lost Humphrey, the highest rebounder on the team and it will be interesting to see who can replace her.
Ormerod (3.7 in 2006-2007) may have to step up to the plate while Elliott and Mahoney are focused on scoring points or Jenny Pfeiffer may need to focus on scoring points (8.7 in 2006-2007) while Mahoney and Elliott assist Ormerod.
The star players for the upcoming season are Elliott, Mahoney, and Ormerod. Elliott, who is 6’6”, leads the Cats in scoring, with an average of 13.8 points per game and ranks in the top ten of four SEC statistical categories, including third in field goal percentage. She also is tied in for 11th in the SEC in rebounding with an average of 7.2 rebounds per game.
Mahoney played in 29 games last season and is second on the team in scoring with an average of 12.7 points per game. In March 2007, Ormerod became the eighth player in Kentucky Wildcats womens basketball history to chart a points-assists double-double.
