Congrats to the Tennessee Lady Vols basketball team -- 2008 NCAA Women's Basketball Champion!! The Lady Vols won it all for the second straight year and 8th time overall. Candace Parker showed true grit playing with the pain of a separated shoulder and still being named MVP of the "Final Four" for the second straight year.
Thanks to http://utvolsfootball.blogspot.com for this collage celebrating the UT Lady Vols' back to back Championships.
Only 3 other players have done that before (Cheryl Miller, Diana Taurasi and Chamique Holdsclaw. Anosike, Hornbuckle, and Bobbitt were also key to the Vols post-season run.

Here's a nice story about the five Lady Vols just drafted by the WNBA and also Pat Summitt's new recruting class for 2008-2009. According to MoonDog, the Lady Vols have the top recruiting class in the country, getting 5 of the top 20 high school players in the nation. Tennessee got a #1 seed in the Midwest region of the 2008 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament. I've got the Lady Vols winning it all in my office pool. I predict LSU and Tenn meet again in the Semi-finals. Unfortunately, they can't both go to the NCAA Championship game since they will meet in one of the semi-final games in the Final Four.
First up for the Lady Vols is Oral Roberts on Sunday, March 23, 9:30 pm. The game will be on ESPN2. If you are looking for tickets, check out 2008 March Madness Tickets.
Under the direction of head coach Pat Summitt, who will coach her 33rd season this year, the Lady Vols have won 14 SEC championships and 12 SEC tournament championships.
They have had great success in the NCAA tournaments, making it to the final four an astounding 17 times, with the most recent being in the 2006-2007 season. They have won seven national championships and after nearly a decade without a championship win became the 2007 national champions in the NCAA tournament last year.

The Lady Vols couldn’t have had a better season last year. They had a 34-3 record and were undefeated in the SEC. Not to mention that they were the national champions in the NCAA tournament, beating Rutgers. They ranked first in their SEC division and in the SEC overall winning all 14 SEC games. The team was also the national champions in the NCAA tournament. The team also had the honor of being ranked fourth in the USA Today/ESPN coaches Top 25 women’s college basketball poll.
The reigning national champs are coming into the 2007-2008 season with plenty of returning starters and a clear plan of attack. They have a brand new practice facility right next to the renovated Thompson-Boling Arena where they play their home games.
There's been lots of controversy about Summitt's decision to take Connecticut off the Vols' schedule. I'd love to know the details of why that happened. Summitt only says that UCONN's coach (Geno Auriemma) knows "exactly" why; Geno says it's because she hates his guts....
Too bad they won't play each other -- at least not in the regular season. We can only hope they meet in March Madness.
But, in any event, the Volunteers still have tough non-conference games against North Carolina, Duke, Stanford, and a re-match of the national championship game with Rutgers.
Plus, of course, the Lady Vols play their tough SEC schedule -- most notably games against LSU, Georgia and Auburn.

Born Patricia Sue Head on June 14, 1952, Pat Summitt attended the University of Tennessee-Martin, where she starred on the women’s basketball team. During her tenure, she was named an All-American and was named co-captain of the silver medal-winning 1976 Olympic basketball team.
After her senior season was cut short prematurely as a result of an ACL tear, Pat Summitt was named head coach of the University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers in 1974. She was 22 years old at the time. 4 of her players in that first season were 21.
After an inauspicious beginning (an 84-83 loss to Mercer College), Summitt led the Lady Vols to a 16-8 mark in her inaugural season as Head Coach. However, she quickly elevated the team to farther reaching heights, leading the Lady Vols to the NCAA Final Four in only her 3rd season, following a 28-5 campaign in 1976-77. That season kicked off a 10 year run that included 7 Final Four appearances and which culminated, in 1986-1987, with the Lady Vols first National Championship under Head Coach Pat Summitt.
All-American Candace Parker (1st Team preseason All-SEC), who ranked #16 in blocks and #18 in points per game in the NCAA last year, will return for her junior year as guard and forward and will no doubt be a key player for the Vols. She really came on last year during the NCAA tournament, being named MVP of the tournament. Candace is the favorite to be National Player of the Year this year.
Alexis Hornbuckle (also 1st Team preseason All-SEC), who was #8 in steals per game in the NCAA last season, will return as guard in her final season with the Vols and is expected to do well.
Tennessee will be challenged by LSU and Georgia in the SEC, but they will likely win it again. They have a very seasoned team -- with Seniors Nicky Anosike, Shannon Bobbitt, and Alexis Hornbuckle -- in addition to Candace Parker.

The Lady Vols have gained recognition for their National Championship, most recently at the White House where the team was able to meet President George W. Bush.
Parker has been keeping busy in the off-season playing for the USA Basketball Women’s Senior National team where she scored a team high of 21 points in the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship game. Parker played alongside former Lady Vol Kara Lawson who was also a big contributor on the team.
You can never really predict who will win it all this early. And, it is tough to repeat. Still, we think Pat Summitt, Candace Parker, Alexis Hornbuckle and company will take another national championship trophy back to Knoxville.
Undoubtedly, the road to Tampa will go through Knoxville Tennessee -- again.
