University of Georgia women’s basketball coach Andy Landers was born on October 8th, 1952 in Maryville, Tennessee. After graduating from Friendsville High School in 1970, Landers attended the Tennessee Technological University and received his degree in Physical Education in 1974.

One of the most successful collegiate coaches of all time, Landers began his career in 1975 as the head coach at Roane State Community College in eastern Tennessee. While there, he compiled an 82-21 record over four years before being hired as the Bulldogs head coach in 1979.

Over the last 28 years, Landers has made the Bulldogs program one of the most prestigious in women’s basketball. Although he inherited an unsuccessful program without any type of pedigree, Landers turned the Bulldogs into a powerhouse and has won consistently since taking over the job three decades ago. Landers has also compiled a 789-246 (.762), won seven SEC titles (1983, 1984, 1986, 1991, 1996, 1997, and 2000), four SEC tournament titles (1983, 1984, 1986, and 2001), and four NCAA coach of the year awards (1986, 1987, 1996, and 2000). Moreover, his rivalry with Tennessee coach and fellow Hall of Famer Pat Summit dominated women’s basketball in the Southeastern Conference for over a decade.

However, despite his numerous accomplishments, Landers has seen his program stagnate in recent years and has not enjoyed much success over the last decade. The Bulldogs have not been to the Elite 8 since 2004 and have not been a factor in the NCAA title discussion since they last won it in 2000. Moreover, the school’s 25-9 record and third place finish last season does not inspire future confidence. Therefore, while Landers’ past accomplishments are unquestionable, there is concern that he will be unable to reinvigorate a program that has lost some of its luster.

The Time For a Change Has Come...... Not rated yet
As a UGA grad and avid Bulldawg fan, I must say that I think Coach Landers has taken the Lady Dawgs program as far as they can go. The last decade has …
