Georgia Bulldogs Win SEC East

Georgia Bulldogs Review

By Kavin Caruso

Georgia Bulldogs are now SEC East Champs for the 2011 season. Georgia beat Kentucky 19-10 on Saturday in Athens. The Bulldogs started the year at 0-2, and then reeled on 9 straight victories. The Bulldogs did not beat South Carolina Gamecocks, but they did beat Florida Gators. The Georgia Bulldogs are 9-2, 7-1 in conference play.

Now let's look back at the beginning of the season. Georgia started the season on September 3rd against Boise State at the Georgia Dome. Georgia did not look good at all. Georgia lost to Boise State 35-21 in the Chick Fil A Kickoff Game. Week 2, South Carolina barely squeaked by a win 45-42 in Athens. After that loss, fans in Athens wondered if the Bulldogs would ever win. Then the following week, a non conference game against Coastal Carolina. Georgia shut out Coastal Carolina 59-0. Georgia is now 1-2 but needs to improve against BCS teams. The following week Georgia beat Ole Miss Rebels in Oxford 27-13. It was Georgia's first conference win and brought Georgia to 2-2. The next week Georgia faced another Mississippi team, Mississippi State Bulldogs. Georgia beat Mississippi State 24-10 in Athens. Now the Bulldogs look pretty good, 3-2, 2-1 in conference play.

Georgia Bulldogs won their fourth straight win in Knoxville where they beat Tennessee. The Bulldogs ended their 2 game skids in Knoxville to beat Tennessee 20-12. The Georgia Bulldogs did run into some trouble in Nashville the following while playing Vanderbilt. Georgia who usually goes to Nashville and beats the Commodores for an easy win, had to come back to beat the Commodores. In this game, it was a seesaw battle between each team. Georgia luckily got bailed out in 33-28 win. In fact, late in the 4th quarter, Drew Butler's punt was blocked and he had to run to stop the Commodores from scoring. If they had scored, Vanderbilt would have won the game. Earlier in the day, South Carolina beat Mississippi State but they loss running back Marcus Lattimore for the season. He injured his ankle; it cost South Carolina's chance to repeat for the divison.

Two weeks later after a bye week, the Bulldogs played their annual game against Florida. In this game, Florida had the lead first and the game. In the 2nd half Georgia scored 2 touchdowns to beat the Gators. It was Georgia's first win against Florida since 2007. Georgia beat Florida 24-20; Georgia now is now in 1st place in a tie with South Carolina. At the end of the game, running back Richard Samuel injured his leg and will miss the rest of the season.

The next week, it was homecoming for the Bulldogs. They beat New Mexico State 63-16. Aaron Murray had a career day. On this game, Georgia had to start two redshirt running backs. Isaiah Crowell, Carlton Thomas, and Ken Malcome were suspended for failing a drug test. Luckily for the Bulldogs they didn't play a SEC team, they might've lost if they played LSU or Arkanas. Later that night, Arkansas beat South Carolina. Georgia took over for sole possession in 1st place in the SEC East division. All Georgia had to do is win the last two SEC games to win the division.

The following week Georgia crushed Auburn 45-7. Georgia had to win this game because South Carolina beat Florida earlier in the day. The Bulldogs jumped all over Auburn and never let Auburn come back to make it a game. Georgia now has won 8 straight games and needs one more win the secure the East division.

On senior day this past week, Georgia faced Kentucky Wildcats. Georgia somehow didn't start out on a bang like the previous week. In fact Georgia was down by 4 points and had to kick 2 field goals to take a lead before half time. Georgia in the 2nd half dominated over the Wildcats. The Bulldogs did score a touchdown in the 4th quarter to secure a 19-10 win over Kentucky. Georgia finally won the East division and they won 9 straight games. This was Georgia's first division title since 2005 season. Georgia will be facing their interstate rival Georgia Tech this Saturday at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
