ARKANSAS RAZORBACKS BASEBALL

Arkansas Razorbacks baseball is always top-knotch and entertaining. That is clear from the fact that last season, Arkansas led the NCAA with the highest average fan attendance in all of college baseball. And the 2008 college baseball season is fast approaching. In fact, the Razorbacks started Fall baseball practice on September the 4th.

Apparently the NCAA presented a new rule stating that teams have a 45-day period for practice in the fall. This means that the players are delving into practice at the recorded earliest start date of the University, and continuing to refine their skills all the way until October 18th.

With 20 newcomers to the 2008 roster, and only 16 returning lettermen, this might be just what the team needed to tone up and get their talent ready to make the moves.

Along with the new NCAA rule of the 45-day practice period, the baseball season also doesn’t officially begin until the third week in February. While this gives more time for practice, the guys will be playing in a total of 25 games in just the first 5.5 weeks of the 2008 season. With a total of 56 season games, and 32 of those games being at home, this season is going to be one of the toughest they’ve seen in quite a long while.

In addition to those 56 games, the baseball team also has 30 SEC (Southeastern Conference) games and a two game mid-week series at both Nebraska and Arizona State. The team schedule certain provides tons of excitement for the fans but who is to say how the actual team players will handle all the action.

With the player lineup of the Arkansas Razorbacks baseball team, the season might not be as tough as some people believe. The new players who just joined include seven Major League Baseball Draft picks, and the other team members include a Division-I transfer, seven athletes who transferred from junior college, and 12 high school players.

Brett Eibner, the Major League Draft pick, is joined by Andy Wilkins, the 25th-round choice of the Texas Rangers, a right handed pitcher named James Mahler who was the 42nd-round pick of the Philles and 46th-round selection of the Washington Nationals, Ryan Cisterna. These bad boys don’t stop there, as late are junior-college players Gary Poynter, drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 2005, and Mike Bolsinger, who was the 34th-round pick of the Cleveland Indians in 2006.

However, Arkansas lost virtually their entire starting rotation from last year to the MLB draft -- so, it's likely that their young replacements, though talented, will take some time to grow into their own.

It seems that the Arkansas Razorbacks baseball town does not only house athletic talent, but also academic as well. There have been nine of the team’s players that have been selected for the 2007 SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll. This acknowledgment is only given to the players who maintain a 3.0 or above GPA for the academic year, as well as have completed 24 hours of non-remedial credit and be a member of the varsity team for the entire NCAA Championship. This is not an easy feat for most people, so congratulations to the Arkansas Razorbacks baseball team members for doing such an outstanding job.
