SOUTH CAROLINA GAMECOCKS BASEBALL

The South Carolina Gamecocks baseball team has a history of renowned players with five Major League Baseball draft selections since 1998. 56 players have signed professional baseball contracts since the 1997 season when head coach Ray Tanner began his career with the team.

This past year alone the team had 23 players with Major League franchises. They have 30 All-Americans as well as two Southeastern Conference Player of the Year, one Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Year, a Golden Spikes Award winner and one Southeastern Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

The team has outstanding players, and as a team itself, holds several records and awards in their own right. Over the last seven seasons the South Carolina Gamecock baseball team has had six appearances in the NCAA Super Regionals, a feat which only three teams in the nation has achieved since the 2000 campaign.

It also should be noted that South Carolina baseball has great fan support as well. In fact, they were 4th in the nation in fan attendance last season -- behind 3 other SEC schools -- Arkansas, LSU and Mississippi State!

During that time the South Carolina Gamecock baseball team has reached the College World Series three times, won two Southeastern Conference championships, and a Southeastern Conference Tournament title.

Among the 12 schools in the Southeastern division the seven consecutive years that the South Carolina Gamecock baseball team is the longest running streak. Also in those seven years their team has the fourth highest win total in Division I Baseball as well as a Southeastern Conference best 130-70 record in conference match-ups.

In 1975 the South Carolina Gamecocks baseball team was ranked second in the College World Series, and won that place again in 1977. They took the fourth position in 1981 and then 7th in 1982 and 1985. Finally in 2002 they returned to the College World Series and placed second once again. The next year the team slid down to 5th place and then 3rd in the same number of return years in 2004.

The new 2008 South Carolina Gamecock baseball schedule has 23 games on the roster against the 2007 NCAA Tournament teams and 35 home games. The season opens on February 22nd by hosting a three-game series against East Carolina (located in North Carolina).

This year’s 30-game Southeastern Conference schedule begins on March 14th with the guys traveling to Tennessee to go up against defending Southeastern Conference Champions Vanderbilt. The following weekend the South Carolina Gamecock baseball team will have a three-game series against College World Series participants Mississippi State as the Southeastern Conference opener.

The South Carolina Gamecocks baseball team are set to play against other teams, such as Georgia, Auburn, LSU, and Arkansas in the Southeastern Conference road contests.

The Southeastern Conference Tournament is scheduled to take place on May 21st through the 25th in Hoover Alabama, and the NCAA Regions, along with the NCAA Super Regionals, which are scheduled for the two weeks following the Southeastern Conference Tournament. The College World Series is set for the 14th of June, until the 24th or 25th of the same month, in Omaha, Nebraska.

Over the past 5 or 6 years, the Gamecocks have had the top college baseball recruiting class in the nation. We think that pays off this year in a big way. We think South Carolina, led by Travis Jones, will win the SEC East and the SEC tournament. We also think they will go to the College World Series and win it all in 2008!
