VANDERBILT COMMODORES BASEBALL

The Vanderbilt Commodores baseball team is part of the smallest school within the entire Southeastern Conference and the only private school in the conference.

It was because of their size that the Vanderbilt Commodores, along with the whole athletic department, were integrated into another department of the University referred to the Office of Student Life in 2003. There was a lot of concern about this move because of the chance of losing coaches and recruits, or being forced out of the Southeastern Conference. However, to the delight of all, the change has resulted in varying degrees of success for the baseball team.

The baseball team, and all athletic teams within the Vanderbilt school, received their name in honor of Cornelius Vanderbilt, as it was a nickname he had while in school. Also the Vanderbilt fans often refer to their teams as “Dores”.

A long-standing rival of the Vanderbilt Commodores baseball team is the University of Tennessee, and Ole Miss. This is due to the fact that the two teams play each other every year at the Southeastern Conference cross-division and are permanent opponents.

In 2004 the Vanderbilt Commodores baseball team qualified for the NCAA Super Regionals and according to Baseball America had one of the nation’s best recruiting class in 2005. The team also made their way back to the NCAA Super Regionals again in 2006 and then won the Southeastern Conference regular-season and tournament crowns in 2007.

During last season the Dores also earned the first national seed for the NCAA tournament. It had been twenty seven years since a Vanderbilt Commodores baseball team had won a Southeastern Conference tournament title.

The 2007 Southeastern Conference tournament was quite a tournament! Though the team started off with a loss at the opener, the Dores came out with a five win streak. The first Number one seed to win the Southeastern Conference tournament since Alabama did in 1997 and is the second team from the Eastern Division to accomplish such a feat since 1996 season.

Congrats to Vandy's star pitcher, David Price -- 2007's College Baseball Player of the Year. He was also the top pick in the Major League Baseball draft. You can read more about David Price at SEC Sports Snapshot.

With the 2008 season approaching, the Vanderbilt Commodores are likely to face their toughest season yet, especially with the opening game against Oregon State, who is a two-time defending champion. The team will be taking on 11 teams that made it into the NCAA tournament and 4 teams that played in the College World Series. The Oregon State game will be played on February 22nd at Arizona State’s tournament.

The Vanderbilt Commodores schedule in April ends with games at Austin Peay on the 22nd, Belmont on the 23rd and finally against Kentucky, which is a home game, on the 25th through 27th. It then opens May with a three game series against their rival, Tennessee, on the 2nd through the 4th. The Saturday game against Tennessee will be broadcast by Fox Sports Net. A final series on May 9th through the 11th will close out the regular-season games for the Vanderbilt Commodores baseball team.

We think Vanderbilt baseball will challenge again for the top of the SEC. They'll be led by Mikie Minor. However, the loss of David Price will be felt. Also, their tough schedule may prevent them from winning the regular season crown. However, that schedule will pay dividends on the post-season. Vanderbilt will make it to the College World Series once again. It should be another exciting year for Dores' baseball.
