The Auburn Tigers baseball team welcomed 14 new players to the roster this season, with 13 of those players being freshman and one transfer student. From the new additions to the team are three drafts from the Major League and Mike Bianucci, who returned to play at Auburn even though he was a 23rd-round pick for The Plains.
It is said that with four of the new players, Brian Fletcher, Kevin Patterson, Hunter Morris, and Wes Gilmer the team is likely to have the strongest offense that has been seen in College baseball history in quite some time.
A junior transfer, Matt Hall, comes from Arizona State where his record was impressive. In the College World Series team Hall hit for a .313 and in three games against his new teammates he performed an 8-for-11 with four RBIs, three runs scored, and two doubles.
The list of qualifications for these new players doesn’t stop there. Morris, Patterson and Fletcher all chose to decline signing contracts with the teams that drafted them (2nd-round pick for the Boston Red Sox, 24th-round pick for the Chicago White Sox, and 39th-round pick for the Houston Astros respectively) just to play with the Auburn Tigers baseball team. If that doesn’t promise a winning season, I don’t know what does. These men seem dedicated in earning the Tigers another Tournament title and recognition.
Practice for the team begins on September 20th and lasts until November 3rd. As tradition goes, the practice season will be closed out by the Blue/Orange World Series, beginning on October 30th and lasting until the 3rd of November.
The Auburn Tigers hold a Celebrity Home Run Derby the last day of the Blue/Orange World Series, Friday, November 2nd, where $1 donations are required at the gate in order to raise funds to support the Lee County Boys and Girls Club. This is the fourth annual event of this type and the team hopes to beat their 2005 high total of $2,778 for the cause.
Just to make the Celebrity Home Run Derby more existing, they are offering a chance to win an Auburn Tigers Baseball Under Armor Prize Pack for each dollar which is donated. Of course we can’t ruin the surprise by telling what comes in the prize pack, one will just have to donate and try to see!
The Celebrity Home Run Derby will include Tim Hudson and Gabe Gross, both whom are Major League players, former football stars Stan White, Ben Leard, Benji Roland and Cole Cubelic, as well as former player Bobby Huddleston whom was on the AU team. It’s a day where current players and celebrities come together for a home run hitting contest. Its a lot of fun for the Auburn Tigers baseball fans and a way for the team to loosen up before the season starts while doing some good in the community.
Last season Auburn baseball ended up last in the SEC. They'll move up a bit this year, but probably still have a losing record in the SEC. Still, the 2007-2008 Auburn baseball team will show improvement.
