LSU Tigers Volleyball

Congratulations to LSU Tigers Volleyball -- 2007 SEC West Volleyball Champs!

LSU Volleyball has a strong history. Before, Florida rose to prominence in SEC Volleyball; LSU was THE team to beat. The Lady Tigers won the SEC Volleyball championship in 1989, 1990, and tied the Lady Gators in 1991. Since then, it has been all Gators.

However, over the past several seasons, LSU Tigers Volleyball has steadily climbed into the national spotlight. Fran Flory, who is in her tenth year with the LSU, coaches the Lady Tigers and has slowly, but surely, raised the national profile of LSU Volleyball.

The Louisiana State University had a great season in 2006. They ended up with an overall record of 26-6 and were 16-4 in Southeastern Conference play. They were SEC West Champs and finished the season ranked 19th in the nation. LSU ranked fifteenth in the nation for assists, fourteenth for kills per game, and twentieth for match win-loss percentage.

The lady Tigers enter the 2007 season ranked twenty-second in pre-season national polls and are working hard to earn a second straight SEC West championship.

After losing key players such as Dee Romero, the Tigers will be making some adjustments to accommodate the younger squad. Several players will be returning to their former positions after being moved last season.

One of those players is Maria Skender, ranked sixth in the nation for aces per game, who will return to the right side this year after playing left in 2006. First team All-Conference player Kyna Washington will return as outside hitter after ranking second on the team in kills and kills per game.

Tania Schatow will return to the middle this year. Schatow is especially skilled at blocking and will likely help middle blockers Lauren DeGirolamo and Brittnee Cooper get some much needed blocks. DeGirolamo, who ranked ninth in the nation for blocks per game in her freshman year, will no doubt make an impact on the team with her powerfully skilled defense.

Certainly LSU Tigers Volleyball will have another successful season. They will make it to the NCAA tournament again. But, we think they will end up second to Alabama in the SEC West. The reason is that Bama has a great team and LSU has many young players who will benefit greatly from a year of experience.
