Matthew Mitchell Biography

Kentucky Wildcats women’s basketball coach Matthew Mitchell was born in Louisville, Mississippi on December 16th, 1970. After attending Mississippi state university and earning a degree in marketing, Mitchell took a job as an assistant at Winston academy high school. After holding this job for one year, he became a high school head coach at Central Holmes Academy (1997-8) and Manchester Academy (1998-1999).

Having developed a thorough knowledge of the high school game, Mitchell was offered a job as an assistant at the University of Florida. He held this post for three years then moved on to an assistant’s post at Kentucky. His performance there convinced Morehead State to hire him as their head coach in 2005. Mitchell’s performance in his two seasons at Morehead was mediocre at best (he posted a 16-13 record in 2005-6 and a 14-16 record in 2006-7) but Kentucky was apparently convinced that this was due to his inability to recruit talent to Morehead State because they offered him their coaching job in the 2007 offseason.

In his three plus years as Wildcat’s head coach, Mitchell’s teams have largely been mediocre but there were major signs of progress last season. After going 17-16 and finishing 5th in the SEC in 2007-8 and 16-16 in 2008-9, the Wildcats made a large jump in 2009-10 when they finished 28-8 and second in the conference. This progress was due to a combination of gradual talent infusion and Mitchell’s ability to develop his coaching philosophy (which partially derives from Pat Summit’s since he spent time under her as an undergraduate assistant) and tailor it to fit the needs of a major Division One program in the Southeastern Conference. At this point, his future, and that of women’s basketball at Kentucky, certainly looks bright.
