2008 - 2009 SOUTH CAROLINA GAMECOCKS WOMENS BASKETBALL

Looking for our current South Carolina Gamecocks Womens Basketball page? Check out 2010-2011 South Carolina Gamecocks Womens Basketball.

The University of South Carolina women's basketball team finished the 2007-2008 season with a 16-16 record; 4-10 in conference play. Unfortunately, the Lady Gamecocks ended up dead last in the SEC East.

This year, being in the SEC is tough of course. They will face defending National Champ Tennessee and Final Four finishers LSU. So, 2 of last year's NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament "Final Four."

It's on to March Madness for the Lady Gamecocks. They were selected for the WNIT Tournament. If you want tickets, go to 2008 March Madness Tickets.

Prior Discussion:

The South Carolina Gamecocks womens basketball team has been playing hard in the Colonial Center since their induction in the 70s. They have made eight NCAA tournament appearances and three wins at the Metro Conference Tournament.

The ladies of USC have been under the direction of head coach Susan Walvius since 1997, and have had moderate success under the coach.

The Lady Gamecocks had a decent 2006-2007 season with a 19-15 record. They tied for fourth in the SEC-East and tied for sixth in the SEC overall. The team went to the SEC tournament where they beat Auburn before losing to Tennessee in the second round 81-63. The ladies also went to the WNIT making it to the third round before losing to Hofstra 64-59.

The ladies of USC have been working hard preparing for the upcoming season, and have some potentially strong talent. Forward/guard Kellindra Zackery and guard Lauren Falohun will return for their second year with the Gamecocks and are expected to do well after a much hyped freshman season.

Freshman Ashlie Billingslea will have to sit out her first year at a Gamecock after suffering a knee injury during a pick-up game in the preseason. Billingslea was going to be able to start in some games as guard, and her injury may cause some problems for the team. Freshman Jordon Jones is expected to do well this season as shooting guard, especially for her reputation for accuracy in three point throws.

The Lady Gamecocks tend to focus on having a strong defense and that will likely not change this year. The ladies of USC have a strong recruiting class, but with the lack of experienced upperclassmen and several injuries, the South Carolina Gamecocks womens basketball players may have a hard time excelling on the court. They placed decently in the SEC last year and should stay somewhere in the middle again this season. If they can overcome their obstacles and improve their defense the team should make an appearance in post-season tournaments.

The Gamecocks new recruiting class has gained recognition and was ranked 18th in the nation by the Collegiate Girls Basketball Report. Coach Walvius has added C.J. Pace to the team this year. Pace is coming to USC after playing two years at Chipola, a junior college in Florida, where she led the team to two state championships.

The USC staff will see a change this year as Ronald Hughey joins the team as the new assistant coach. Hughey is coming to the South Carolina Gamecocks womens basketball team after coaching at South Carolina State University for three years. He will be replacing Ken Griffin who left the team to take the recruiting coordinator position at the University of Charlotte. The Lady Gamecocks will kick off the 2007-2008 season on November 9 when they play Saint Francis at home.
