2008 - 2009 VANDERBILT COMMODORES WOMENS BASKETBALL

Looking for our current Vanderbilt Commodores Womens Basketball page? Check out 2010-2011 Vanderbilt Commodores Womens Basketball.

Congrats to the Lady Commodores for winning the 2009 SEC Woman's Basketball Tournament Championship. The Lady Dores are headed to the NCAA Tournament now as a #4 seed. Get your 2009 March Madness Tickets.

The Vanderbilt Commodores women's basketball team enjoyed yet another terrific season in 2007-2008. The Lady Dores finished last year with a 25-9 overall record. They were 11-3 in the SEC. So Vandy ended up in third place in the SEC and advanced to the NCAA "Sweet 16" for the 13th time in school history. Vanderbilt finished 21st in the final AP poll last year.

2008-2009 will be challenging for the Vandy ladies as they face a schedule which includes matches against 11 teams that made the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Vanderbilt will also have at least four national television appearances.

Vanderbilt will have a very experienced team as they return all five starters from the previous year's squad. Melanie Balcomb begins her seventh season with the team. She looks like a "keeper" as Vandy has already beaten UT once this year. Of course, UT lost 4 of its starters from last years team. We are picking Vandy to WIN the SEC this year.

If you want to see the Lady Commodores in person, during this potentially historic season, you'll need to get tickets. You can find them from links on 2008 March Madness Tickets.

Prior Discussion:

The Vanderbilt Commodores womens basketball team has enjoyed moderate success in college basketball since their induction to the program. The team has been under the direction of head coach Melanie Balcomb, who will start her sixth season coaching the Lady Dores, is currently the most winning coach in Vanderbilt history.

The Lady Dores had an impressive 200-2007 season scoring a 28-6 record. The ladies were third in the SEC-East and third in the SEC overall. They were able to play big in the SEC tournament and walk away with the championship title after beating out LSU 51-45.

They went to the NCAA tournament where they beat out Delaware State before losing to Bowling Green in the second round 59-56. The team also had the honor of being ranked 9th in the USA Today/ESPN coaches Top 25 women's college basketball poll last year.

The ladies of Vandy have been practicing and working hard to perfect their skills and plays for the upcoming season.

Amy Malo will start off her this season with the Dores after being redshirted due to an injury last season. Sophomore guard Merideth Marsh is expected to do well this season after a good showing in her freshman year. Amber Norton will also return for her second year with the Dores as forward and should see more time on the court.

After an impressive showing in the SEC last year, the Lady Dores should be on track to have a winning season once again. With the return of some injured players and a strong group of lowerclassmen, the ladies of Vandy should be able to place well in their SEC division and make it to some big post-season tournaments. They may find it difficult to win the SEC tournament for a second year because of powerhouse Tennessee, but they still have a good shot at the title.

The Lady Vols have gained a lot of recognition for their stellar playing last season and have already earned several honors in preseason rankings. The ladies of Vandy were ranked first in three-point field goal percentage by the NCAA Top 25 ranking. They also placed #7 on the AP National Poll and #17 on the USA Today/ESPN coaches' poll. They were also ranked #14 on the CBSSportsline.com poll.

The Lady Dores were able to take their skills abroad as they enjoyed a nine-day basketball trip to Spain over the summer where they were able to compete against other teams from Europe and the USA. Former Lady Dore Carla Thomas, who was an All-SEC selection and All-American, has earned success during her post-college career after being one of the top 22 prospective draft picks for the WNBA. The ladies of Vandy will kick off their 2007-2008 season on November 9 when they play UAB at home.
