LSU Tigers Track and Field is a national power. The Tigers ended 2007 ranked #2 nationally and 2d in the SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championship.

The LSU Tigers T&F and cross country teams begin the season when they travel to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, for the Crimson Classic. The event will take place at the Harry Pritchett Running Park. The LSU Tigers track and field women’s team start things off with a 5K meet and the men follow with an 8K.



The competition consists of 13 teams from throughout Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana, including Southeastern Conference foes Mississippi State, and Ole Miss. The head coach of the team, Elliott, plans to get an early evaluation of how the L team members look with these meets.



The three top runners on the LSU track men’s team will be Simuchimba, a first time cross country competitor for the LSU Tigers track and field team, Michael Hendry and Jacob Simmons, both of who are veterans on the squad. Simuchimba had an amazing season with the LSU Tigers track and field team already in 2007 with the 7th best 10k time in school history. He also placed third in the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships.

Michael Hendry was number 2 at the NCAA South Central Regional Championships and ran in four races for the LSU Tigers track and field team. Although Jacob Simmons sat out for last year’s season, he was one of the main contributors in 2005 and finished among LSU’s top-three at both the Southeastern Conference and Regional Championships. .



The Louisiana State University track and field women’s team has a group of seniors that are expected to do extremely well this year as well. Megan Broussard was did consistently well in the LSU Tigers track and field women’s six races last year, placing first or second for each one.

Also Lindsey Day and Erin Vandivort finished in the top four at both the Southeastern Conference and NCAA South Central Regional Championships. Lastly Kate Accardo was

redshirted during the 2006 season, but was a key contributor in 2005 and is expected to return to the current season with just as many successes. These four women are predicted to anchor the team and ensure steady victories because none of them have to be superstars in order to perform well.

Each of the Tigers track and field team members listed work and train hard and don’t expect to win recognition for every action.



One of the biggest hurdles for LSU, both men and women, was the Chile Pepper Festival held in Fayetteville, Arkansas on the weekend of October 13th. There were 37 teams assembled for the women’s 6k run and 43 for the men’s 10k. This competition is the main event used to weigh the Tigers track and field athletes against their competitors to get an idea of how they will do in the Southeastern Championships.

Especially since the meet included three ranked teams including Arkansas (No. 5), Virginia Tech (No. 19), and Texas Tech (No. 24). Elliott went into the meet feeling as though his LSU Tigers track and field teams had a great chance at finishing within several top 10 positions, though that aspiration did not become reality.
