LSU Tigers Swimming and Diving

LSU Tigers Swimming and Diving Men's Team LSU Tigers Swimming and Diving is the class of the SEC West. Unfortunatly, that statement doesn't say too much as most of the top Southeastern Conference swim teams are in the SEC East.

Still, LSU's men's team is currently ranked 19th nationally. The Lady Tiger swimmers are ranked 26th. So, not bad at all.

Historically LSU Tigers Swimming and Diving has not been a particularly impressive program. In fact, they have only won the SEC Swimming and Diving Championship once – the 1988 Men’s team (led by current coach Adam Schmitt).

Last season, the LSU Tigers Men’s Swimming and Diving team finished 6th in the SEC Swimming and Diving Championship and 28th nationally in the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.

LSU’s Women’s Swimming and Diving team ended 2007 ranked 6th in the Southeastern Conference and 17th nationally. Additionally, the Women’s team saw its own Rachel Ware named 2007 SEC Freshman Diver of the Year.

But, forget about history. LSU swimming is about NOW and the FUTURE. In fact, in the Fall of 2007 the LSU Tigers Men’s Swimming and Diving team was ranked in the top 20 in the College Swimming Coaches Association poll. This was the first time any LSU swimming team has been ranked in the top 20 nationally since before 2000.

Adam Schmitt has returned to his alma mater as head coach. In his four years as head coach, Schmitt has completely turned Louisiana State University ’s Swimming and Diving program around. They are now firmly planted in the national spotlight.

Coach Schmitt was a 10 time All-American and 6 time All-SEC swimmer. Other coaches include Sean Schimmel (Associate Head Coach); David Geyer (Assistant Coach); Matt Leach (Assistant Coach); Anne Shawhan (Assistant Coach); and Doug Shaffer (Diving Coach).

The 2007 – 2008 LSU Tigers Swimming and Diving teams are led by Junior swimmer Julius Gloeckner and Sophomore diver Rachel Ware. LSU also has at least two Olympians on the team. They are: Miko Malberg who will represent Estonia , and Heather Brand who will represent Zimbabwe in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , China.

LSU Women’s Swimming and Diving Team

Most recently, Senior Paige Brown of the LSU Women’s diving team won the platform event at the Georgia Diving Invitational. Brown also has been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll three times.

The LSU Natatorium is the Tigers’ swimming and diving home since 1985. It has hosted several major national swimming competitions including the 1987 U.S. Diving National Championship.

So, what’s our prediction for LSU Swimming and Diving in 2007? We think they’ll continue to improve. Look for them to challenge for the SEC championship and end up in the top 15 nationally.
