Arkansas Razorbacks Basketball History

A quick look at Arkansas Razorbacks basketball history shows it is one of the top basketball programs in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).

Despite a long and storied men’s basketball history, it is difficult to argue in fact that there is one single year that stands above all others in regards to all-time basketball success. That year, without second thought, would be the 1993-1994 season, a season in which the Razorbacks made strides that were unprecedented in the history of Arkansas college basketball.

During that storied basketball season at the University of Arkansas, this Nolan Richardson led team made a historic run through the regular season and through the NCAA Tournament (March Madness), which ultimately led to the University of Arkansas' first and only NCAA National Championship in men’s basketball.

During the season, the University of Arkansas compiled a 31-3 overall record, and a strong 14-2 record in the Southeastern Conference, with losses at Alabama and Mississippi State, and a loss to Kentucky in the Southeastern Conference Tournament, the only blemishes on an otherwise perfect season.

The Razorbacks 1994 NCAA Tournament run of 6 wins included wins over perennial powers such as Georgetown, Michigan, and Arizona before eventually slaying Duke in the NCAA Title game.

In all, the University of Arkansas men’s basketball program has participated in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four 6 times (these coming in 1941, 1945, 1978, 1990, 1994, and 1995), and has, since joining the Southeastern Conference prior to the 1991-1992 basketball season, won the Southeastern Conference Championship Tournament once (in 2000), and has won 2 Southeastern Conference regular season championships (those coming in 1992 and 1994).

In addition to the success that the University of Arkansas has amassed since joining the Southeastern Conference, the Razorbacks had compiled an impressive record of success while members of the Southwestern Conference. During their tenure in the SWC, the Razorbacks managed 6 Southwest Conference Tournament Championships and 22 Southwest Conference regular season championships.

The University of Arkansas men’s basketball team plays its home basketball games in the Bud Walton Arena, which is situated directly on the campus of the University of Arkansas.

This arena, which holds 19,200 people, is considered to be the fifth largest on-campus arena in the United States. The arena, which opened in November of 1993, was named after Walmart Co-Founder James “Bud” Walton, who was responsible for donating a large portion of the funds needed to build the new on-campus facility. Over the course of its history, the Bud Walton Arena has provided a tremendous home court advantage, drawing over 17,000 fans a game.

In fact, the Bud Walton Arena has been listed as the Best SEC Basketball Arena.
