Missouri Tigers Football History

The University of Missouri had it's first game in 1890 against Washington University in 1890. They played in St. Louis and lost 28-0. This marked their first intelligent game. They have since gotten just a bit better. In their long and storied history they have reached 24 bowl games and have won 10. They have been in the last Associated Press Poll at year's end six times since it's onset in 1936.

Missouri claims to be the first to have a home coming game. They started doing this before games against Kansas in Kansas City were to be played. They changed this policy due to worry of attendance when conferences realigned and other matters so they started doing it at home. You see before this, a lot of games were played off-campus. Coach C.L Brewer plead with the old grads to come on home and cheer on the new boy s to see them on to victory with tremendous success at what is dubbed the first true homecoming game in 1911. In 2010 their homecoming included the ultimate hype for college students in the know, which is ESPN's College Game Day. They came in and set the world on fire. Missouri had a huge crowd that day. They were playing against the BCS ranked #1 Oklahoma team. 18,000 fans attended the event. The turnout shattered the previous 15,800 mark. Fans had set that mark at the University of Nebraska in 2001.

Missouri even has a very healthy rivalry with Nebraska making that story even more funny. This was one of the longest in the Big 12 until Nebraska's departure and of course now that Missouri leaves, many of these rivalries will be either dead or sort of a distant memory unless something is done in non-conference scheduling. Nebraska led the series 65-36-3. They played for the Victory Bell trophy.

There is also a rivalry with the for mentioned Oklahoma. The winner gets the Tiger-Sooner Peace Pipe. Missouri won the first of these games 13-0. The Pipe had been donated by an "M" man. OU leads this series 65-23. In the game we had spoke about before the Number 11 Missouri Tigers had defeated the Number 1 ranked OU Sooners 36-27.

Missouri has a lot of traditions and things to bring with them, but the fact is that they have not been a traditional power football in a long time and they will need to recruit, recruit, recruit. The SEC does not treat you kind if you are not huge and fast and I see neither of these things with this team. Their past is full of one time victories, miracle games, but no miracle seasons. If you are to pull off a dynasty in the SEC you need recruiters to get you the talent and coaches that can teach them where to go and how to get there. If you can start there and start with players that will listen at least then you will be headed in a building direction.
