Jim Wells Biography

Baseball coaching legend Jim Wells was born on March 21st, 1955. After finishing school, Wells joined the LSU coaching staff as an assistant in 1987. He stayed two years at LSU and, after this brief apprenticeship, left to become the head coach of Northwestern State in 1990. Wells spent four years there and, between 1990 and 1994, averaged forty wins per season and won SLC regular season titles in 1991, 1993, and 1994.

Wells’ success at the mid-major level brought him to Alabama’s attention and the Crimson Tide hired him as their head coach in 1995. Before Wells’ arrival, the Tide had suffered a minor winning drought, but Wells led the team to a forty-two win season and an SEC tournament victory in 1995. The team improved further in 1996, winning fifty games, both the SEC regular season and tournament titles, and Wells earned the SEC Coach of the Year award. Moreover, Wells’ landmark 1997 campaign, in which the Tide won an impressive fifty six games and the SEC tournament title, cemented his hold on the Alabama job for the next decade.

Between 1998 and 2009, Wells became the winningest coach in school history and a living legend. Wells led the team to an average of forty wins per season, three additional SEC tournament titles, and an additional SEC regular season title in 2006. Wells also won a second SEC coach of the year award in 2006. However, three consecutive seasons between 2007 and 2009 with less than forty wins and no postseason play weakened Wells’ hold on the job and the Alabama legend retired after the 2009 season. Wells left with a 522-246 (.680) record and an irreplaceable spot in school history. He is clearly one of the Best All Time SEC Baseball Coaches.
