2008 Ole Miss Rebels Volleyball

If you are looking for information about this year's team, go to
current Ole Miss Rebels Volleyball page.

Ole Miss Rebels Volleyball is led by Joe Getzin, who was named the SEC Volleyball Coach of the Year for 2006. Getzin is the first coach in Ole Miss history to receive the award, which was rightfully earned after leading the Lady Rebels to their first winning season in ten years. Getzin was also able to lead the ladies to their first NCAA Tournament in the school's history and is slowly putting Ole Miss volleyball on the nation's list of teams to watch in the future.

In 2007 Ole Miss Volleyball had one of its best seasons ever. The Lady Reb's finished the season with a 14-6 record, including six series sweeps. Ole Miss has a shot for a return trip to the NCAA tournament in 2008 (it would be the 3rd straight!). Last year the Lady Rebels lost to BYU in the first round of the NCAA volleyball tournament.

However, things have been a bit rough so far this year. Right now, the University of Mississippi volleyball team is 2-1 in the SEC and 6-6 overall. Not great. The reason for the struggle is that the Rebels lost a trio of senior leaders from last year's squad.

In the off-season, Mississippi volleyball head coach Joe Getzin agreed to a four-year contract extension. All-SEC senior setter Rachel Kieckhaefer and Freshman All-SEC selection outside hitter Jackie Jones are the leading players of the team. They will be joined by junior opposite side hitter Caitlin Weiss who helped pace the Rebel offense in 2007 with 3.41 kills per game. Senior middle blocker Emily Jones, who turned in 104 blocks a year ago, leaving the Rebels offense and frontline defense in good shape, is also back.

The fact that 2007 was the best volleyball season in school history has provided great motivation for the Ole Miss team. We think they'll have a good year; win the SEC West and make their 3rd straight NCAA tournament.

The Lady Rebs had a good season last year with a 19-13 record. They finished third in the SEC West and fifth in the SEC overall. The Lady Rebs were able to make it to the NCAA Tournament but found themselves a little out of their element, losing to fifth-seeded Southern California 3-0 in the first round.

Last Year's Comments: After making their first appearance ever in the NCAA tournament, the Lady Rebs are looking to continue their strong momentum in 2007. With eleven players returning to the team, including the powerful trio of Katie Kramer, Lauren Moffett, and Tara Langley, the Lady Rebs are lined up for another stellar season.

Kramer recorded 438 kills last season, the highest on the team, and was named MVP at the Nike/LaQuinta Challenge. Langley, who finished second on the team for digs, will reprise her role as defensive specialist. Langley was also ranked seventh in the SEC for digs and helped earn thirteen digs and a service ace in the NCAA Tournament last year.

Moffett, who led her team in blocks and was ranked eighth in the SEC for service aces last year, is expected to excel at middle blocker in her final season with Ole Miss. Rachel Kiekchaefer, who was recently deemed “quarterback on the floor" by Coach Getzin, has been steadily showing improvement as setter.

The Lady Rebs are also excelling off the court and were awarded the Gameplan/ AVCA Team Academic Award for achieving a 3.30 or higher grade point average. This accomplishment followed the receipt of the Chancellor's Cup in 2006 for highest GPA of any sports team at Ole Miss.

After appearing in four tournaments and hosting one in the spring, the Rebels worked hard over the summer to remedy their weaknesses and create a stronger team. The ladies spent their off-time focusing on conditioning and are working diligently to prepare for the 2007 season.

We think Ole Miss Rebels Volleyball looks strong for the upcoming season. They have solid talent and will benefit from their experience in the NCAA Volleyball Tournament last season. Old Miss should place in the top three in the SEC West in 2007 and make it to the NCAA Tournament again.
