2008 Kentucky Wildcats Volleyball

If you are looking for information about this year's team, go to
current Kentucky Wildcats Volleyball Information.

2008 Kentucky Volleyball was hot! In fact, the UK V-ball continued it's hot streak by making it to its 4th straight NCAA tournament. Unfortunately, they lost to Michigan in the first round. Last year, the Lady Cats lost to Michigan State in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

The Lady Wildcats are 14-2 right now and 5-0 in the SEC; they've won 11 straight matches. They are ranked 27th nationally by the CBS College Sports Network.

University of Kentucky head volleyball coach, Craig Skinner has led the Lady Cats to the point where they now are a perennial contender in SEC and NCAA volleyball. With 3 straight NCAA bids, they already have accomplished something no other UK volleyball team has ever done.

And the future looks bright as UK had the 17th best recruiting class in the country; giving them three consecutive top-26 recruiting classes. Kentucky's incoming volleyball class, includes middle blocker Gretchen Giesler, the “Best Blocker" award winner at the 2006 and 2007 National Junior Classic Tournaments; setter Christine Hartmann and middle blocker Becky Pavan.

The UK team has senior, and All-SEC player, Queen Nzenwa. Junior Sarah Rumely is also back to lead UK 's offensive attack. The Wildcats return 10 letter winners from the 2007 team, including five starters.

With such a balanced and strong volleyball squad, Kentucky will challenge Florida for leadership in SEC Volleyball. The Lady Cats have a good shot to achieve something very special in 2008.

Comments from 2007 UK V-ball page:In 2004, UK hired Craig Skinner as head coach, and he was able to lead the ladies to the NCAA Tournament and post the team's best record in over ten years. The ladies will begin their third season with Skinner in 2007 and hope to continue their success on the court.

Kentucky Wildcats volleyball had a good season in 2006, posting a 19-12 record. They were second in the SEC East, trailing Florida by eight SEC wins. However, it was the best record for Kentucky Wildcats Volleyball since 1992. UK made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament where the Lady Wildcats lost to Purdue 3-0.

New recruit Brooke Bartek, has transferred from Nebraska's National Championship team, and brought a lot to the Lady Cats at outside hitter. Bartek had little playtime at Nebraska and is looking to make an impact for UK. She was ranked thirteenth in the nation as a recruit when she joined Nebraska.

Sophomore Sarah Rumely, who was named SEC Freshmen of the Year in 2006, will return as starting setter and will likely factor in a large number of assists and service aces. Rumely was honored for her hard playing and was named to the 2007 U.S. Women's Junior National Training Team. Rumely played in various locations throughout the summer.

The Lady Cats will welcome a new addition to their coaching staff as well after Lauren Sauer was hired as the new assistant coach, replacing Janeae Dowling who left in April after the Army transferred her husband to a new base. Sauer comes to the Cats after playing for the Universidad de Almeria volleyball team in Almeria, Spain and was also a starter on the Georgia Tech volleyball team, where she received multiple recognitions from AVCA and the ACC. The ladies have also been giving back to their community in the off-season, volunteering for Habitat for Humanity. The Cats will kick off the 2007 season on August 24th when they take on Northern Iowa on the road.

In his third season with the Cats, it seems that Coach Skinner has acclimated to his position, and his confidence will likely produce results on the court this year. The Cats have the talent to win big and will likely make it to another NCAA Tournament. However, we don't think they will challenge Florida, but Kentucky Wildcats Volleyball will battle with Tennessee for second in the SEC East.
