Weekly thoughts from left field…

Florida is still the best team in my opinion until someone can prove they can score runs against them. The Gators have played nine games and gave up a total of three runs!! Including two wins on the road and a three game sweep at home against North Carolina by a total score of 22-0. Pitcher Stephanie Brombacher is 6-0 on the season and has yet to allow a run to score. She was named national pitcher of the week for her performance against UNC last weekend.

Alabama showed they were not invincible on defense last weekend giving up 20 runs in 5 games at home in the Bama Bash, but they were still undefeated after scoring 61 runs of their own including 20 in a win over Syracuse. They proved they have some grit after coming from 5 runs down to beat Louisville 9-8 on Saturday night.

Thanks to Stephanie Taylor from ArkansasRazorbacks.com for this great picture of SEC Softball.

Auburn and Georgia have been winning handily at home, but have yet to face any teams that will even come within a sniff of the top 25 this season. Things will get a lot tougher for Georgia this coming weekend though in California. Auburn has another week of bottom feeders before we can answer some real questions about them this season.

Kentucky won the Garnet and Gold tournament hosted by Florida State this last weekend. They won 4 out of 5 games in route to the title only allowing 5 total runs to be scored against them while starting 4 different pitchers during the weekend including two freshmen.

LSU and Tennesse stumbled in road tournaments this past weekend. LSU was hurt the most losing 3 out of 5 games in Houston including two eight-inning one run affairs with the host Houst Cougars, who are now ranked this week. The Tigers also fell 5-3 to #20 Oklahoma State over the weekend. Tennessee blasted Cal Poly, Boise State and SIUE by a total score of 38-5, but lost a heartbreaking 4-3 decision to host school UNLV and couldn’t generate any offense against #18 Standford while falling 0-5 to the Cardinal.

Arkansas was the wildcard this weekend. They started their weekend tournament in Las Vegas against the #1 UCLA Bruins and upset them 4-3 and then played another tough opponent in #14 Oregon and just fell a little short with an 8-7 defeat in eight tough played innings, but then were routed by Long Beach State 11-0 in five innings and fell to host UNLV 3-2. The Razorbacks have been up and down all season. From the highs of beating #1 UCLA and playing tough in losses to #14 Oregon and UNLV to being blasted by Long Beach and losing to Sam Houston. You don’t know what you are going to get with the Hogs this season. They are going to need to be more consistent to compete in the SEC West this season.
