2010 OLE MISS BASEBALL

Looking for our current Ole Miss Baseball page? Check out 2011 Ole Miss Rebels Baseball.

Ole Miss is coming off a superb season in which the team managed an overall record of 44-20, and an SEC record of 20-10, and the team finished in first place in the SEC West Division. The team was dominant from top to bottom, and ended up the season with a ranking of 11 in the final ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. And while the team is undoubtedly losing some key talent from the 2009 squad, enough is returning to this year's squad that it is hard to believe that this club will not be once again competing at or near the top of the conference.

Key Departure Players:

When your team has a season as stellar as the one that Ole Miss had in 2009, there are inevitably going to be significant departures that your team must then learn to deal with and recover from in order to maintain that level of play in the following season. Ole Miss has a number of significant players leaving. Those players include catcher Kyle Henson, who hit .338 last season, with 8 home runs and 34 RBI, and outfielders Jordan Henry (.343 batting average, 31 RBI, and 38 stolen bases), Logan Power (.311 batting average, 7 home runs, and 58 runs batted in), and Jeremy Travis (.279 batting average, 7 home runs, 30 runs batted in).

The team also experienced some departures on the pitching rubber, notably lefthander Nathan Baker and Phillip Irwin. Baker had a good year in 2009. He went 4-3 overall, with an ERA of 3.63. Irwin, on the other hand, had similarly strong numbers, and in fact, managed to post an even stronger win loss record. He went 8-3 with a 3.84 ERA. The team will also have to cope with the loss of Brett Bukvich (9-3, 4.42 ERA).

Key Returning Players:

Fortunately for Ole Miss, despite the loss of some significant talent from last year's squad, Ole Miss is returning a sizable number of talented players to help the squad maintain a high level of performance. The list of returning talent at Ole Miss reads like a who's who of established SEC stars. This list includes shortstop Timothy Ferguson, who batted .358 with 21 Rbi and 18 stolen bases, Zach Miller (.341 batting average, 5 home runs, 38 RBI), and 1B Matt Smith, who hit .336 with 8 HR and 59 RBI. Ole Miss also returns some strong arms.

Lefthander Drew Pomeranz is considered one of the best hurlers in the SEC. Last season, this strikeout pitcher posted impressive numbers. He went 8-4 on the season with an ERA of 3.40. He is poised to be in the discussion when discussing the best pitchers in the SEC entering 2010. Jake Morgan is another talented pitcher returning to compete in 2010. 2009 was a solid year for Morgan. He went 4-1 with a 3.46 ERA on the season, and also compiled 9 saves on the year. Righthander David Goforth's role is also expected to be increased in 2010 off his good season in 2009 in which he went 1-1 with a 2.80 ERA and 3 saves.
