The Arkansas Razorbacks men's track and field team played well during the 2008 season. It was the last season of John McDonnell with the team. The Arkansas Razorback track and field team won its' 84th conference title and 46th SEC title.

In 2008 season the Razorbacks also won their 21st triple crown, winning the conference titles in cross country, indoor and outdoor in the same season. Individually, Arkansas Razorback senior J-Mee Samuels won his second gold medal at the 2008 NACAC Under-23 Track & Field Championships. Alain Bailey and Luke Laird also advanced to the NCAA Championships for Arkansas Razorback track and field. The 2008 NCAA Indoor Champion in the triple jump senior and team captain Nkosinza Balumbu earned a silver medal.

For Balumbu the 2008 season was big success,as he ended the 2008 campaign with a national title, two All-America honors, two SEC titles and two All-SEC honors. In 2009 season the departure of the legendary coach McDonnell will be a great loss, but under the new talented head coach Chris Bucknam, the Arkansas Razorbacks men's track and field team looks no less promising for the next season.

Last Season's Discussion:

It should be exciting in Fayetteville March 14-15 when the Razorbacks host the 2008 Indoor NCAA Track and Field Championships.

But, way before that, in facut, during the week of September 7th, 2007 the Arkansas Razorbacks track and field team had three athletes named to the All-Academic Track and Field Team by the US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association. Say that three times fast eh?

Brent Rosson, who is originally from Harrison, Arkansas is the Arkansas Razorback track and field team's high jumper and ended the school year with a 3.74 cumulative Grade Point Average with a major in exercise science. In addition to his academic excellence, Rosson also earned several awards for his athletic excellence for the Arkansas Razorback track and field team with a fourth place position at the Southeastern Conference's Indoor Championship and sixth at the Southeastern Conference's Outdoor tournament; Rosson was also a NCAA Mideast Regional Championships qualifier.

An Arkansas Razorback track and field team member named Tyler Hill, who hails from Louisiana, was added to the honor roll with a 3.48 cumulative Grade Point Average with a major in biology. By finishing second in the Southeastern Conference 5,000 meters at the Southeastern Conference's Indoor Championships, Hill earned his first All-SEC honor. From there he finished fifth in the 5,000 meters, at Southeastern Conference's Outdoor Championship, and eighth in the 10,000 meters. The Arkansas Razorback track and field athlete qualified for the NCAA Mideast Regional Championship with a time of 14:09.15 in the 5,000 meter run.

Finally, Adam Perkins earned a 3.42 cumulative Grade Point Average with a major in finance. This Arkansas Razorback track and field team member is originally from Liberty, Montana and earned his recognition by being a five-time All-American winner and a 2006 national champion. Perkins ended his career with two runner-up finished, in the year 2007, at the conference championships. He was the first athlete to place second in the Southeastern Conference Indoor mile, having a time of 4:01.75, but not qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships. During the Arkansas Razorback track and field outdoor season, Perkins has a time of 3:44.71, finishing second, in the 1,500 meters race and placed 10th at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championship, clocking four regional qualifying marks in that season, and yet did not earn a bid to the NCAA Outdoor Championship.

The Arkansas Razorback track and field team will lose Perkins due to graduation this year, but both Hill and Rosson will return for another season during the 2007-2008 year. Joining the two stellar athletes will be 20 returning lettermen and 13 newcomers to the Arkansas Razorback track and field team.

2009 Arkansas Razorbacks Women's Track and Field

Arkansas Razorbacks Women's Track and Field team showed mediocre performance in the 2008 season. Arkansas Lady Razorback track and field finished third at the 2008 SEC Championships with 88.5 points. Sophomore Katie Stripling has been impressive throughout the year. She in the pole vault was Arkansas' lone title win at 2008 SEC. At the 2008 NCAA Mideast Regional Championships, the Lady' Backs finished seventh with 27 points. At 2008 NCAA championship Arkansas finished 22nd in the team standings with 11 points.
