The University of Kentucky led the nation in attendance for the sixth consecutive year, it is also the 15th time out of the last 16 years the Wildcats have done so. Kentucky was also joined in the Top Five by the University of Tennessee.

Below is list of schools with rank and attendance numbers:

NCAA RankTeamGamesTotal AttendanceAverage Attendance

5 Tennessee 18 341,130 18,952
18 Vanderbilt 17 234,632 13,802
29 Arkansas 19 225,794 11,884
35 Alabama 19 208,668 10,983
41 South Carolina 17 177,254 10,427

83 Auburn 20 126,483 6,324
94 Mississippi State 17 97,069 5,710

If you look at just total attendance and not the average, Kentucky finished third in the nation with 354,046 fans seeing 15 home games in Rupp Arena. Louisville was first with 458,436 fans attending 21 home games in the YUM! Center. Syracuse was second with 423,924 fans in 19 home games in the massive Carrier Dome.

If you include all games (home, road, and neutral sites) Kentucky was the most watched team in college basketball during the 2010-2011 season with 755,748 people who watched the Wildcats play in person. Of course, Kentucky played in three games in the Maui Invitational Tournament, three games in the SEC Tournament, and five games in the NCAA Tournament.

The SEC as a conference finished third overall behind the Big 10 Conference and the Big East. A total of 2,416,498 fans watched SEC teams play during the season. That averages out to 11,187 fans per game. During the SEC Tournament 109,397 fans watched in Atlanta, which comes out to 18,223 fans per session.

This is not surprising that Kentucky leads the nation in attendance. Kentucky has one of the most passionate fan bases in the country. They will pay almost any price and travel any distance to see their team play.

There is a couple of things that stand out when you look at these numbers. One thing is the job that Bruce Pearl did in his time at Tennessee before the violations that lead to his firing. Tennessee supported the Volunteers throughout their roller coaster season. It will be interesting to see if attendance drops next season if the Volunteers begin to struggle.

Arkansas fell out of the Top 25 in attendance for the first time since it opened the Bud Walton Arena in 1993. Arkansas has always enjoyed the benefits of a loud home crowd, but fans grew tired of coach John Pelphrey. It is expected that with new coach, Mike Anderson, and a Top 25 recruiting class coming in, the Razorbacks will most likely return to the Top 25 next year.

The only team that failed to draw over 100,000 fans for home games was the Mississippi State Bulldogs. They drew just over 97,000 fans this season. Again, this is a result of poor play and off the court problems for this squad. The Bulldogs usually have good support.

Still this was another good year at the gate for the SEC with over 2 million fans attending games. This shows that SEC fans not only love football, but also love to root for the school on the hardwood.
