2011 SEC Basketball Awards

2010-2011 SECSportsFan.com Awards

First congratulations to the Florida Gators on winning the SEC regular season and the Kentucky Wildcats for winning the SEC tournament championships. After some early season struggles for the Gators and SEC road struggles for the Cats, both teams were able to turn things around and made a heck of a run through the SEC. We will take a deep look at the Cats and Gators in the year end wrap-up after the NCAA tournament.

For now in this writing, we will present our ALL-SEC Teams and awards. Even though the AP and coaches already gave out their awards, we have a different take from them.

Our All-SEC Teams are a little different. There are only two teams and five players to a team.

First Team

Chris Warren - Mississippi - 19 points, 3.8 assists, 93% free throw

Brandon Knight - Kentucky - 17.5 points, 4.2 assists, 4 rebounds

John Jenkins - Vanderbilt - 19.5 points, 3 rebounds, 40% 3 point

Terrence Jones - Kentucky - 16.5 points, 9 rebounds, 2 blocks

Trey Thompkins - Georgia - 16.1 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2 blocks

Kentucky Wildcats guard Brandon Knight
13 March 2011: Kentucky Wildcats guard Brandon Knight (12) slams in the Kentucky Wildcats 70-54 victory over the Florida Gators in the SEC Tournament at The Georgia Dome in Atlanta, GA.

Second Team

Erving Walker - Florida - 14.6 points, 3.3 assists, 3 rebounds

Scotty Hopeson - Tennessee - 17.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.3 assists

Chandler Parsons - Florida - 11.6 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists

Jeffery Taylor - Vanderbilt - 15.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists

JaMychal Green - 16.1 points, 7.7 rebounds, 2.3 blocks

Looking at individual awards, I went completely different than the AP. I gave coach of the year to Anthony Grant of Alabama. He did a heck of a job leading the Tide to the SEC West title in only his second season. With Grant as head coach, Alabama can look forward to more of this in the future.

Individual Awards

Coach of the Year - Anthony Grant - Alabama

Player of the Year - John Jenkins - Vanderbilt

Freshman of the Year - Brandon Knight - Kentucky

Sixth Man of the Year - Doron Lamb

For the SEC Tournament team, my picks were pretty much dead on with the media members in Atlanta. Plus I added a couple of guys from Alabama and Vanderbilt.

Vanderbilt Commodores guard John Jenkins
11 March 2011: Vanderbilt Commodores guard John Jenkins (23) in the Vanderbilt Commodores 87-81 victory over the Mississippi State Bulldogs in the SEC Tournament at The Georgia Dome in Atlanta, GA.

SEC Tournament Team

Darius Miller - Kentucky MVP

Josh Harrellson - Kentucky

Brandon Knight - Kentucky

Chandler Parsons - Florida

Kenny Boynton - Florida

Jeffery Taylor - Vanderbilt

Tony Mitchell - Alabama

So the SEC basketball season is over. Now we get to sit back and see who gets into the NCAA tournament. We will have a look at all the SEC teams in the "Big Dance" when the brackets are announced.
