Florida and Michigan had a common opponent that year. Florida beat Vandy 25-19 Michigan beat Vandy 27-7. Florida had 5 games which it won by a touchdown or less(2 of which were by 1 point). Michigan had 1. Michigan was actually ranked #1 in the computers heading into the #1 vs #2 game with Ohio St. They lost by 3 points. Florida was beaten by Auburn by a 10 pt margin.

Difference is Florida lost early and Michigan lost in the last week of the season. The 'ol "what have you done for me lately" routine.

This is the whole reason the BCS was created-to eliminate human error. It still doesn't work because the results are still 2/3 human vote. Voters love the SEC thanks to the Ohio State Faileyes giving away championships.
